Minnesota sheriffs' offices issued almost double the number of permits to carry handguns in 2013 than they had the year before, according to figures released by the state Friday. It was the largest number since the state's permit-to-carry law was enacted in 2003.
As of Friday, more than 165,000 people had valid permits to carry guns in Minnesota, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Andrew Rothman, Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance president, estimates about 4 percent of adults eligible in Minnesota to obtain carry permits have them now.
"Mostly, you'd never know it," he said. "Most carry-permit holders don't advertise the fact that they have a permit. For some people, it's to avoid the irrational fear that some have of guns.

Minnesotans are no different from folks in other states. Get out of the Twin Cities’ core and Duluth, and you are in red country.
Sounds okay to me-—except, of course, we should never have to jump through bureaucratic hoops to exercise our rights ...
The beginning of the article was pretty interesting, especially the part about permit applications spiking around presidential elections. At the end, when the “gun violence prevention” lady started bleeding-heart-ing all over the computer screen, I just started to get angry.
She’s upset that 42 (out of over 165,000) permit holders were convicted of domestic assault? And that of those 42 incidents, as many as none may have involved a firearm? That’s .0254% of all permit holders. The rate of domestic violence for the entire population of the US is .4141%. In other words, concealed carry permit holders are about 1/20th as likely to abuse a partner as non-permit holders. Do I wish that the number was less? Yes, of course, I wish that both of those numbers were smaller. But I’m not going to give up my right to carry a concealed handgun in public to defend myself (and my wife) just because of small number of misogynists who abused their wives.
And then as far as the crime rate goes, about 1000 out of the 165,000 permit holders committed crimes (more than half of which were of the traffic variety). Only 57 were serious enough to affect the person’s CCW. That comes out to .606% of all permit holders who committed any sort of crime. The percentage of the US population who committed violent crimes or property crimes (not traffic offenses) was 3.246%. In other words, non-permit holders are about 10 times as likely to commit non-traffic-related crimes as permit holders!
That lady should be begging more people to get permits so the crime rate of the entire population will go down!
FWIW, “domestic violence” in Minnesota can include roomates screaming threats at each other.
Just 4%??? There is much room for growth here, Minnesota.
Wish they’d honor my Iowa permit when I’m up that way.
(Of course, I wish Illinois would too.)
There is a lot of things happening in the USA that the msm doesn’t report, but that many people know of through other sources (like FR). Flash-mobs, knock-out “games”, government corruption. inflation of currency etc..
People are arming and preparing the best that they can, including arming themselves.
I know this is off subject. I see you are from Minnesota. Does the GOP have anyone running against that clown Franken? It took blatant vote fraud to get him elected the first time.
Probalby Julianne Ortman or Mike McFadden. Nobody has been endorsed yet, but Weird Al leads in $ by about 20 to 1.
