The new Ukrainian government says it has been invaded by Russia, and has appealed for the United States and United Kingdom to protect it, as they guaranteed under a 1994 agreement.
The move came after pro-Russian gunmen seized both main airports on the Crimean Peninsula early Friday, a day after other militiamen took control of the regional parliament building. With gunmen in the building and the Russian flag flying from the roof, deputies appointed a new government and passed a motion Thursday calling for a referendum on the future as part of Ukraine.

It does not say they are Russian troops, but it is obvious the invasion is with their equipment.
Putin knows that Obama will do absolutely nothing in the Ukraine or in Venezuela.
Any other president would have credibility to at least force Putin to use caution in his takeover. But none related to our Commie in Chief.
Obamugabe won’t discuss this with his buddy, Vlad. At best, he’ll look into his “international tool box” and find...
John Effin Kerry!
At that point, he will be found mumbling, “I should have kept that Condoleeza Rice in my tool box.”
We’ve been invaded. In fact, it is now illegal in certain parts of the U.S. for American school children to display the American flag in American schools because it could upset the invaders’ children. Sounds like we’ve been conquered.
Putin takes over while Obama, Kerry and Biden slink around wringing their hands and moaning, "Vlad, you are a bad boy. We don't like you any more". Incredible!!
With all due disrespect to zero, we have no business propping up the tire burning crowd over there. We have more problems here than are being addressed now.
I have no more use for Obama as the next guy, but the truth is that no American president, even Ted Cruz, would be willing to risk a war of immense proportions to help the Ukraine. It is not the President that Putin is taking his measure of, but the people. He has observed for more than a decade the United States involved in two conflicts that would rank as minor in terms of casualties, and has observed much consternation among the populace. Do you really think we are willing to go full Eastern Front, engage in the 2nd Battle of Kursk over the Ukraine. We know the answer to that question, and so does he.
How come we're hearing nothing anymore about how things got out of control when the demonstrators killed troops during a truce?
Literally every weapon with any faction in the Ukraine is Russian...
Don't be absurd.
No rational leader - and I include President Reagan - would seriously threaten force on what is, in essence, Russian territory.
The Ukrainians are very close to Moscow and very far from Washington, and I hope they have taken this into account in their calculations.
Nobody wants to accept that both sides are doing a lot of manipulating there and we’re powerless to do anything about it.
Its frankly not worth getting distracted with.

What about the 1994 agreement? I agree with you that this would normally not be our business. However, we did sign an agreement with them. It is a sticky situation I know. The fact that we no longer have any credibility is bad enough. The fact that we will not, or can not, honor our agreements is even worse.
Also, we haven’t even had time to figure out the overall situation over there; who is who, etc.
"I'm John Kerry, and I'm reporting for duty,"
If you’re asking Barry for help and you’re not Muslim you might as well try p-ing up a rope.
It ain’t gonna happen.
People seem to think that borders are forever or can only change with war. Why not let this part of Ukraine that clearly seems to want to be with Russia become part of Russia? There’s obviously different parts of the country with differing allegiances and the existing borders are artificial anyway.
“The parliament also called for guarantees of the memorandum signed by Ukraine, Britain, Russia and the United States in Budapest in 1994. That agreement guaranteed Ukraines sovereignty and current borders in exchange for surrendering the nuclear weapons that were left after the collapse of the Soviet Union.”
Apparently, that agreement isn’t worth the paper it was written on.
Before voting on accession, Ukraine demanded from Russia, the USA, France and the United Kingdom a written statement that these powers undertook to extend the security guarantees to Ukraine. Instead security assurances to Ukraine (Ukraine published the documents as guarantees given to Ukraine[5]) were given on 5 December 1994 at a formal ceremony in Budapest (known as the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances[6]), may be summarized as follows: Russia, the UK and the USA undertake to respect Ukraine's borders in accordance with the principles of the 1975 CSCE Final Act, to abstain from the use or threat of force against Ukraine, to support Ukraine where an attempt is made to place pressure on it by economic coercion, and to bring any incident of aggression by a nuclear power before the UN Security Council.
As it turns out, they might have been better off holding on to a couple of dozen of them instead of relying on security guarantees from the US and the UK.
Just another situation that will leave the USA looking feckless and ineffective. Don’t sign treaties unless you really mean it.
That is probably what will happen.
