Well. That didn’t go according to plan, did it? Via the Hartford Courant:
Everyone knew there would be some gun owners flouting the law that legislators hurriedly passed last April, requiring residents to register all military-style rifles with state police by Dec. 31. …
By the end of 2013, state police had received 47,916 applications for assault weapons certificates, Lt. Paul Vance said. An additional 2,100 that were incomplete could still come in.
That 50,000 figure could be as little as 15 percent of the rifles classified as assault weapons owned by Connecticut residents, according to estimates by people in the industry, including the Newtown-based National Shooting Sports Foundation. No one has anything close to definitive figures, but the most conservative estimates place the number of unregistered assault weapons well above 50,000, and perhaps as high as 350,000.
Which means that there are probably at least tens of thousands of Connecticut residents who, as of January 1st, are currently guilty of committing a Class D felony for the newly-established crime of failing to register what the legislature has so astutely defined as their “assault” weapons. That includes AR-15s, a.k.a. the most popular rifle in America, and at least one Connecticut lawmaker is shocked — shocked! — that more people haven’t come forward.
“I honestly thought from my own standpoint that the vast majority would register,” said Sen. Tony Guglielmo, R-Stafford, the ranking GOP senator on the legislature’s public safety committee. “If you pass laws that people have no respect for and they don’t follow them, then you have a real problem.”
Hmm. Perhaps the problem was rushing through a bunch of knee-jerk, feel-good, and ultimately impotent laws that you’re not actually sure you want to dedicate the resources to even enforce. That’s a real problem.
Hopefully they are motivated voters.
Title is misleading. not an OOps. It was planned?
This technique worked in Canada.
So many people refused to register their guns that the government just gave up.
My total praise to the real patriots who courageously refused to comply with this unconstitutional horror.
Sometimes civil disobedience is the only way to overturn an unconstitutional horror, like the fugitive slave laws.
They also received thousands of false registrations in Canada. I hope the same thing happens in CT.
If you know a anti gunner feel free to send in a registration in their name.
A few hundred thousand false registrations would destroy and bankrupt the whole system.
Certainly by many of the politicians that voted for the law.
Republican politician: If you pass laws that people have no respect for and they dont follow them, then you have a real problem.
How naive, stupid or disingenuous. If you are the government, you don't have a problem. Of course, the citizens subject to your law have a felony arrest problem. Middle of the night violent entry, possible/probable loss of firearm ownership rights, criminal record, just to name a few.
***Oops: Thousands of Connecticutans are now criminals in possession of unregistered assault weapons***
Criminals are not required to register their firearms. It is a violation of their 5th Amendment rights.

“The original Haynes decision continues to block state prosecutions of criminals who fail to register guns as required by various state law gun registration schemes.”
I am chest-thumping proud of every single person in CT that did not register their firearm(s).
If you pass laws that people have no respect for and they dont follow them, then you (have a real problem.)are an idiot and out of touch and are working against the people you are supposed to represent....
I think a lot of folks in CT will be oiling their guns, and buying water-proof containers.
Almost makes me wish I lived there. I have an NEA commie gun hater in law I would dearly love to register.
Ah well, makes me feel a cozy just imagining it.
Decried the kulak.
” NY refuses to say how many have been registered... “
I only know one person who even so much as indicated he would register. And I suspect he didn’t after all.
I know of quite a few who have simply ignored the stupid NY “S.A.F.E.” act.
The only real impact to those who ignore it (other than they are now criminals) is that ammunition is much more difficult to obtain.
(Best bet is for them to go out of state and buy it.)
Michael Cannon in a House Judiciary committee hearing said:
That is certainly something that no one wants to contemplate. If the people come to believe that the government is no longer constrained by the laws, then they will conclude that neither are they.
Cannon said it is very dangerous for the president to wantonly ignore the laws, to try to impose obligations upon people that the legislature did not approve.
