Student 'humiliated' when denied school lunch

NORWALK, Iowa —A Norwalk 8th grader said she was humiliated Wednesday when she was denied a school lunch because there wasn't enough money in her account.

“I was really embarrassed when I walked out of there, and then my friend she looked at me and she's like 'Where is your lunch tray?' I'm like 'They didn't give it to me,'” said Gillian Richardson.

Gillian’s mother, Pam Richardson, said her family has enough money to pay for her daughter's school lunches, but didn't get a notification from the school that the balance was negative.

“The policy of taking lunches away from kids is ridiculous, because no matter if they are 5 or they're 17 years old, it's not their responsibility. It's not their fault that their parents aren't paying the bills or can't pay the bills,” said Pam Richardson.

Why is this a story? So someone can’t afford lunch for a day. This is news?

This whole crap about kids being entitled to free lunches no matter what is totally out of hand and ridiculous.

And don’t you love how the mother characterizes it as a lunch being “taken away” from her daughter? Look how far we have sunk.

When I was a kid, your Parent’s gave you money to buy your Lunch if you didn’t Brown Bag it. What’s this “account” stuff? I was 18 when I opened my first Checking Account.

No Money, no Peas.

“I’ll bet the welfare scum didn’t miss breakfast, lunch and supper provided free by the school.”

When I was growing up breakfast consisted of toast, margerine, milk or coffee. Lunch was brought from home and was a sandwich, carton of milk and a snack. The cost of these meals is very little and affordable by anyone. Any parent who is unwilling or unable to provide similar meals to their kids should have them TAKEN AWAY and declared UNFIT PARENTS.

Yes and no. They have a custodian/handyman who may do the heavy stuff. The same guy may do two or more schools in areas with fewer students.

But, yes, the kids are expected to do the basic stuff in cleaning up the classrooms. A couple of thick dust and cleaning rags roughly one foot square is part of their required school equipment.

At the end of the day, the desks and chairs are stacked and put back in one corner of the room and every kid gets out their rag and cleans their assigned area. This can include the floor, windows and blackboards. Their HAN even gets a turn cleaning the loo. Oh, the inhumanity!

Well, aren’t you tech savy. In my case, my son forgot to turn in his check, he had his lunch taken away. I don’t use the school online accounts, too many data breaches going on, had one in my county with the emergency information database.

In anyrate, It was his fault, he left the check in his backpack and he learned a lesson.

Here in Calgary, Canada, schools don’t have cafeterias at all, everyone is expected to bring their own lunches/drinks and they eat in their classrooms. I asked a Canadian once if they had anything like a “free lunch” program, and she looked at me like I was nuts. If someone forgets they’re given ramen soup for lunch. I’m guessing if a child comes regularly without their lunch it’s dealt with privately. I’ve since learned that schools here with lower economic populations have free lunch programs, but it’s done school by school basis, not district wide.

There is nothing wrong with expecting folks to pay for what they buy. I felt pretty humiliated when the Mercedes guy wouldn’t let me drive the car home without paying, but I guess that is why I drive an old F-150...

Do you mean to tell me that there is not a "let's make free school lunches like they have in the USA a right!" crowd in Canada comparable to the "let's make free medical care like they have in Canada a right!" crowd down here?

Of course, I understand that Alberta is the sanest province in the Dominion, similar to a Texas or Wyoming down here.

When did “I said” or “s/he said” become “I’m like” or “s/he was like”?

OK, you want to talk about "humiliated"? Scroll down and check out the mom's posted comments following the article and compare to the video of the 8th grader. Here's an excerpt of some of mom's comments. They're more embarassing to the kid than missing a lunch.

"The biggest issue is that the food was THROWN AWAY. Schools are taking food, literally from hungry kids hands, not my child she's more than well fed, and throwing it in the trash. That should tick EVERYONE off, unless you are the most heartless of subhuman."

Umm, yeah, clearly your kid is more than well fed...

Yep—it’d teach kids to prepare their own food if their parents aren’t teaching them by example, and end in one generation this nonsense of parents not up to the task of feeding their kids.

Gillian’s mother, Pam Richardson, said her family has enough money to pay for her daughter's school lunches,

Well, there you have it. That's your first mistake.

You will go hungry to ensure the EBT crowd eats and they ALWAYS eat.

Live it, learn it.

“If there was planning involved the Mom would be at home with the kiddos..

My mother was widowed at 31 with 2 small children. She didn’t plan on working, she had to.No government help in those days either.

I stayed home with my kids because I could.I was lucky.

A working Mom could certainly take care of lunches. Mine did. We made them the night before and refrigerated them.
