Student 'humiliated' when denied school lunch

NORWALK, Iowa —A Norwalk 8th grader said she was humiliated Wednesday when she was denied a school lunch because there wasn't enough money in her account.

“I was really embarrassed when I walked out of there, and then my friend she looked at me and she's like 'Where is your lunch tray?' I'm like 'They didn't give it to me,'” said Gillian Richardson.

Gillian’s mother, Pam Richardson, said her family has enough money to pay for her daughter's school lunches, but didn't get a notification from the school that the balance was negative.

“The policy of taking lunches away from kids is ridiculous, because no matter if they are 5 or they're 17 years old, it's not their responsibility. It's not their fault that their parents aren't paying the bills or can't pay the bills,” said Pam Richardson.

Pretty soon, if it's not already, school lunch will be a "right".

Like topnotch medical care, or abortions.

I know of a place where you might be able to pick up a Corvette with slight body damage...just a *pound it out* job. :-)

“I’m curious as to where it was . . . ?”

Stamford, Connecticut. Back around ‘71 or ‘72...

Some years ago I read somewhere that schools in Japan didn't even have custodians. At the end of every day the students cleaned up after themselves.

Any truth to that?

Of course you can——with a little planning.

Uh my kids went to a district very close to Norwalk. There were a couple of times we forgot to put money in their account; and the same thing happened. They were not “humiliated”. They just got a lunch ticket punch from another student and ate lunch; and paid back the other student the next day.

A “victim” looking for a cause.

Very good video at your link.

Logical relationships form the basis of the economy, and Friedman explained them very well. I seriously wonder about people who are incapable of grasping concepts such as the fact that corporations pay for nothing—that every penny a corporation has comes from selling its goods and services which themselves are a measure of worker productivity. I strongly suspect that people who are so incapable of understanding these logical relationships have faulty wiring in their brains, much like psychopaths have been shown to have faulty neural connections in the brain.

We could earn a free lunch by working cleaning (garper duty) the trays at the cafeteria. It was always a schoolkid pulling that duty. Also, the deal was pretty much all you can eat........including desserts!

Humiliated and offended only counts if you’re a member of a government-approved minority victim group. If you’re White, too bad.

If there was planning involved the Mom would be at home with the kiddos... Mighty old fashioned of me I know, but kids with two parents where the Mom stays home are way better off IMHO.

Just bring a block and tackle. Oh, and some fiberglass repair kits - a lot of them...

I am of the opposite opinion. The teen will now learn to managed their lunch account in order to avoid being embarrassed. A life lesson in being proactive.

In the early 60’s students cleaned the classrooms at the Catholic grade school I attended. I have no recollection of outside custodial help. Parents painted — lead paint. :)
