Do Stars Who Self-Destruct Bypass Hell Because They Entertained Us?
Townhall.com ^ | February 9, 2014 | Doug Giles

Last Sunday, as most of you know, the Oscar winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman died of a heroin overdose. Strewn about the millionaire’s abode were sixty bags of un-used smack along with five empty/used bags of the “Ace of Spades”. According to the reports, those who discovered the dead thespian said he was found deceased with a needle in his arm. Not a pretty picture.

Later that same night, as the news channels began to report on Hoffman’s death, the various talking heads began to wax eloquently about how he was a great actor, a normal guy, who rode his bike around the neighborhood, loved his children and was an all-around good dude who was now “resting in peace.”

This left me thinking, “What the hell ever happened to hell?”

Did it get shut down?

Did I miss a Facebook alert about its closing?

Did it get defunded like ACORN?

Did Obamanomics also accelerate its demise?

I wonder this because I don’t hear much about the netherworld or the Prince of Darkness anymore and it appears as if, at least according to E! News, you can believe and do whatever the heck you want nowadays and upon your seedy expiration – boom! – you’re in heaven playing a harp, walking around in a white peignoir, sitting on a cloud, eatin’ ice cream with Jesus.

As a former self-destructive, narcissistic drug addict, my carnal man wishes it had that option available thirty-plus years ago, back when I was a hellion, because I never would’ve repented and started following Christ’s lead. Because, you know, he can be a real cosmic killjoy to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life; and what druggie doesn’t want to have his coke and snort it, too?

Just think about it. What a wonderfully convenient and fleshily appealing notion. Heaven without desisting from or believing anything!

Check it out, according to the glitterati …

- I can go to heaven without faith in Christ’s sacrifice

- With zero desire to follow God’s edicts

- I can screw everything that’ll hold still

- Shoot heroin

- Snort coke

- Fuel the nasty, despicable, murderous drug trade with my money

- Utterly wreck my parents', spouse's and kids' lives pretty much forever

And when I die during an O.D. of frickin’ heroin, when I come to, I will be rocking up instantly to the same place Mother Theresa calls home. Yahtzee! What a deal. Shoot, that’s better than the Toyota Sale-A-Thon.

Unfortunately for my flesh, back when I was a user the only option available for me to pull my head out of my backside and to bank eternal security entailed my putting my trust in Jesus’ finished work on the cross and doing a 180 away from all the things that caused him and humanity pain. As stated, there was not the option of doing whatever I wanted and still entertaining a hope of heaven when I was to take the big dirt nap.

However, as seen with the Hoffman situation, it’s now being afforded to us especially if you’ve won an Oscar or a Grammy. Or if you’re a fashion designer. Or any other BS profession that entertainment lackeys drool over. To them, if you dazzled us on the silver screen, the small screen or via the stage … then hallelujah, God loves you and abracadabra … you’re in.

Does it not strike any of you as strange that playmates, reality stars, rock stars, godless actors, mean old aunts and uncles who openly defied God and all that is holy, just and good are instantly sanctified once they die and they’re heading for the same place Billy Graham is?

That’s cuckoo talk to me. But if you’re comfortable with it, good luck. That’s definitely not a dice roll I’d bet on. But then again I could be wrong and the CNN entertainment reporter could be right.

That sounds more libertarian than Hollywood.

There is absolutely NO WHERE in Scripture where purgatory is spoken of. No where. The Bible is completely clear that man has one chance, and that that chance is while we are still alive. You can come up with all the ideas you like, but just as you said about Dr. Jeremiah not knowing, neither do you. The LORD makes it clear. I will go with what I read in the Bible. You can go with whatever it is you come up with from wherever you come up with it from. So, end of discussion. There is no place such as purgatory. It is a man made up idea. No where does the Bible tell us we get to go to this fictional place and get a second chance. The Bible is clear that it is once for man to die. Once. Period. We die and that is it. We either die saved or not saved. Not in some fictional purgatory. End of discussion.

I don’t disagree with a word of the Bible, but I find it rather tasteless to chortle in superiority at Hoffman’s possible final destination. If you guys feel the need, knock yourselves out.

There but for the grace of God go I.

You are right about grace, FSE. Without it we're all lost.

But we've also got to be honest about those who taught us about grace. They also taught those verses I posted. The same guy who wrote that stuff in 1 Corinthians and Galatians is the same guy who has the loftiest view of grace.

At some point, you've got to think that even a self-proclaimed Christian who cold-blooded murders someone didn't get it. Behavior is an indication of belief. We've got to face it.

Well, bless your heart. You have illustrated my point: Christians disagree; but still seek the same Christ. Blessings on your journey.

If you believe that, you don’t know Hollywood.

Well friend, when you find it in the Bible, show it to me. That is WHEN you find it.

My original thoughts on this thread were about Christians making the effort to express unity even though there are doctrinal issues that divide us, since none of us can say with absolute certainty that we understand fully what the Bible’s translation into our language really means in God’s intention. (I Cor 13:12) The Bible deserves a lifetime of study. Greater minds than mine have disagreed with one another about its meaning; and I have no desire to rise to your challenge that I do not perceive is coming from trying to teach or learn but rather trying to insist.

So let us agree to disagree. Continued blessings.

So, we agree that you cannot produce it. I thought so.

I could, if I had the time; but some people just do not feel that pissing contests are an appropriate way to share the gospel. I’m one of those. Are you?

And yes. I share the GOSPEL. NOT lies. The Scriptures tells us to TEST everything. To take nothing at face value except the Word. Your telling me something that is untrue. I refuse to agree to that and to call it the Gospel.

So he really expects that local news and the entertainment media are going to lead with "Philip Seymour Hoffman is now rotting in hell"?

All addicts are "nice guys" and "great people".

I think that is basically because what they do while actively addicted is just so "un-nice" that whenever they are doing anything, seemingly normal they get twice the credit a non-addict would get.

I’m not going to post to you any more, since my earlier posts illustrated how rigid certainty could be challenged logically based on scripture.

May God illuminate your path.

I could care less if you post or not. I certainly know that there is nothing logical about anything you have posted. You are one of those that Paul warns in his gospels that are out there spewing out lies, false and misleading propaganda and calling it scriptural. You are telling people something that is absolutely wrong and scriptural and you base it on something that you “believe” in your mind is true and have no scriptures to back it up. You complain that you do, but you are “to busy” to look for it. IF you had something that great of importance, that backed your so called belief system, you would not have to look for it, you would KNOW EXACTLY where it was located in scripture. This more leads me to know that you are saying something that you have no evidence to back up. Scripture tells us to look for evidence of what “theories” that people would tell us. You offer nothing, thus I know you are a false teacher, etc. So, you are right. I am not going to waste time on you. You have your mind made up on something that is wrong and since you cannot lie your way into getting me to believe it, you cry and run for cover. So, bye. Waste your time on like theories with like people. I will continue to tell the Gospel of Grace, based on Scripture and the Cross. Not on lies you tell. Sira and nada.

I Corinthians 3:11-15 KJV St. Paul says:

“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”

RetiredArmy:

I do appreciate your agreeing to stop posting to me, as it appears you want to use the Forum for personal attacks on my faith, intentions and integrity, in violation of the spirit of the Forum.

My open-ended inquiries in post 72 about how our human minds process scripture which suggested that, in humility, none of us can absolutely know the mind of God, have resulted in your spiraling down in a series of posts into calling me a liar, a false teacher and a coward.

Aside from proving my other point in 72 about some Christians’ willingness to treat doctrinal differences as justification for fighting with other believers instead of seeking common ground against our enemy Satan, your unfounded accusations seek to make me the enemy.

I will not allow another poster to goad me like a schoolyard bully’s chicken game into trashing the Catholic belief that appears to have set you off, regardless of whether or not I agree with it.

I love and serve the Triune God, and would not knowingly deny Him, nor presume to speak for Him or the Holy Spirit. Openness to inquiry does not make one false. I know I am beloved by Him, and He is the only One whose judgment matters to me as I seek to respond to Truth as it is revealed to me along the way.

Once again, you are saying something that is not true. You have done this through out this. You are the one who came after me to begin with. When the heat on you to produce came, you started this poor me. I have never, not once ATTACKED YOUR FAITH OR RELIGION. I attacked your lack of being able to produce what you say is in the Bible and it is not there. I told you to simple produce the line of scripture that supports your “theory” that there is a purgatory. You did not and cannot do this because there is not one. Now, you go into a long, poor me, trying to get me attacked by others. You are the one in the poor me mode. You are telling a false statement when you say I attacked your religion.
