Russian athletes marched in to the tunes of t.A.T.u., famous for their lesbianism. Were the producers meaning to be get away with something? They didn't choose the monster hit, "All the Things She Said," but rather the much less popular (and crappy-sounding) "You'll Never Catch Us."
It could severely backfire: The girls of t.A.T.u. aren't really lesbians. They were under-aged girls performing simulated sexual acts for money. If not for being used at the point when Putin would least want to dwell on something negative, one might even think that the song was being used as propaganda FOR the Russian government's ban on "the promotion of homosexuality among minors."
Famous? Monster hit?
And men went wild over them.
YAWN.....
Yes, Monster hit. The biggest pop-music hit ever in Russia. In America, #8 on AOL’s top songs of the decade. Nominee for the 2003 MTV World’s Video of the Year. BMI’s Song of the Year. #1 Song across most of Europe.
I remember this band but don’t remember any sexual acts on display. They probably had a single song advocating homosexuality “Mom, I might be out of my mind, I need HER”. The rest are just aggressive rebel teenagers songs.
I don’t know about their music. I just remember the excitement on FR about them, along the lines of, “They’ll forget about each other if they just have sex with ME!”
I don’t follow pop music in this country, let alone Europe. Sounds dreadful.
Who cares?
Yup. As a man who’s avoided reveling in such things, my theory about pseudo-Lesbian erotica is that they allow guys to see women acting overtly sexual to another person, without having it being ruined by seeing that they’re being sexual towards another male. To the reptile brain, Instead of sexy on one side and a killjoy on the other; it’s sexy on both sides.
My guess is that after years of being inundated by years of 30-year-olds dressed like Catholic-school girls, many of the guys watching them never imagined that t.A.T.u. really WERE only 14 years old.
“Famous? Monster hit?”
Of course!
‘All the Things She Said’:

Classic!
It’s understandable that viewers would be confused, when most performers portraying adolescents are considerably older.
I know I was shocked that they were soooo young.
In fact Russian traditional and legal definition of homosexualism hasn’t include lesbianism for a long time.
Thus, Soviets criminalized homosexual behaviour, it was purely about man-man.
As for woman-woman is was counted as mental deviation and only if said women didn’t married to men and reproducted. If they did it was considered a way of mastrubation or bad habit in a class of smoking or something.
>> Yes, Monster hit.
Man, am I ever out of touch with modern culture!!!
Know what?
It’s my plan to remain that way.
In the U.S. and probably in the U.K., child-labor laws make it expensive and inconvenient to employ performers under 16 or under 18, depending on circumstances. If there’s a role for a child of 10, producers have to jump through the hoops, because an adult can’t be substituted. However, if the role is a teenager, someone over 18 can be styled to play the part.
My middle daughters (13 and 15) are both taller and bigger than I am. If you put a 19-year-old in their clothes, with no makeup and uncombed hair, she’d look their age.
It's nice to know that there are still people with lifestlye choices I wouldn't make that can show some class.
Vey interesting.
The Russians are more advanced than I thought.
