Apple’s ‘next big thing’ might be even bigger than we thought

The iWatch may cost $299 when it launches later this year, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty said in a note to investors on Tuesday (via CNET), a price that’s exactly what Samsung initially charged for its first-generation Galaxy Gear and similar to the Pebble’s second smartwatch, the Pebble Steel. However, the iWatch is expected to be even more popular than its competitors’ offerings and it may indeed me the “next big thing” for Apple.

“Our working assumption is that iWatch largely will be adopted as an accessory device and, therefore, sold into the existing customer base, like the iPad, rather than to new customers, like the iPod or iPhone,” Huberty wrote.

But it won’t really be a watch. just like the iPhone is not really a phone.

iWatch...sounds like a porn device.

I'll bet there's an app for that.

Does that watch come with or without NSA breadcrumbs?

You heard it from me, probably not first, but the idea of a wrist watch is to tie in a heart rate monitor and a blood oxygen monitor to augment Apple’s dedicated fitness metrics chip already present on the iPhone 5S.

I must be one, too. How people can see anything on an iPhone is beyond me (or my capabilities) I had an iPad for about a week & back it went. (I put up with the Kindle only because my wrist doesn’t get tired reading in bed & it’s right in my face)

THe difference here, much to my anti-Apple chagrin, is that the cult of Apple insures success. Samsung, Sony, and a few others have smart watches, they aren’t doing well but Apple will come in and “originate” and the masses will slop it up as mana from heaven.

A 13" MacBook Air/iPad Air hybrid would be a better "something big". This is a gimmick.

Speaking of gimmicks, I got offered a chance to buy Google Glass today. At $1,500...I'll pass, for now.

“Also, anyone who expect apple to price their new product that is competitive to the competitors haven’t been paying attention to history. All predictions that apple will price their product cheap have all been wrong”

Just as with its phones and tablets, Apple will price their watch offering competitively, while offering superior engineering and value.

That is, if Apple comes out with a watch at all... :-)

I’m mainly hoping for a big-screen iPhone.

the iWatch, or any of the wrist mounted phones, will be a complete flop

I think you miss the logic of the device as the 'iWatch' moniker refers more to its place-of-wear position. Last I saw, there was an environment being designed around the device for exercise, health, emergency alerts and other such desirable features to have immediately at hand. I am looking forward to, I hope, the same sense of WOW that happened when the iPad made immediate believers. We will see!

LOL regarding “immediate believers”! I don’t know if you were around for the numerous iPad-bashing posts around here - mainly comparing the name to feminine hygiene products! That is of course versus the amazing experience of actually using an iPad.

I remain ambivalent about the iWatch, but I’ll grant you that the concept has potential!

“the last rumor I read was a 12 inch i-pad to compete with lap tops”

Apple needs to sell a stylus-enabled iPad - that will give it the chops for serious work. Finally.

An iPad with a pressure-sensitive stylus will be a natural medium for artists.
