In a move that signals a great technological leap forward for the auto industry, the federal government announced Monday that it will take steps to require all new cars and light trucks to communicate with each other, with the hopes of drastically reducing the total of more than 30,000 vehicle deaths each year.
The technology, known as vehicle-to-vehicle or V2V, gives cars the ability to talk to each other and exchange safety data such as speed and position. If a nearby car abruptly changes lanes and moves into another cars blind spot, the car would be alerted. The technology relies on vehicles repeatedly sending wireless signals to each other via a dedicated short-range radio network

So, this will go into effect before the pile of dung leaves office. My current vehicle is 5 years old. I am approaching 70 so my next vehicle will probably be my last I buy. It will be a 2016 for sure.
Sure, and make it so no-one under 30 can ever afford a new car. Every time the government mandates a new add-on the price gets higher. Then we get to listen to liberals complain about the high cost of new cars, and the greedy auto companies.
The only ways to increase capacity is by stacking roads vertically or stacking cars "nut-to-butt" horizontally. California, being earthquake country, sees nut-to-butt as the more workable solution.
From a software/hardware point of view this is all quite manageable. I expect that it will be abused every bit as often as the internet is and by much the same parties. Everything has its price, want to play?
Make room for Robo-COP Auto GESTAPO
I fix and sometimes cobble together hardware and have some automotive background ancient though it is, would you want a partner?
This won’t be mandated for a while. They are trying to get it approved before Obama
leaves office and then it will take some time to implement into all cars. jmo.
Some autos already have Lane Warning devices to let you know when you get to
close to the lane marker. They beep or some use a viberation in the
drivers seat. Some slow down if you are using cruise and are gaining on a
vehicle in front of you in order to match their speed. All these take
some getting used to.
This will allow the government to locate/track any vehicle anywhere at any time. When they decide to move against you they will know where to go to get you. But it’s all for your safety of course.
Just before the Chinese attack they will activate their V2V malware and cause all the cars in the country to crash.
A much smaller scale conspiracy is that the use of V2V will grow and grow. One of the first changes is that the police/government will be able to stop your car at the press of a button, and probably locking you in car too.
The perfect way to go in the “the car makes what we think it’s best, not what you want it to do” direction. Surely Google is somehow involved.
So my first thought is a shield over their GPS antenna. System has to have a failsafe mode for driving in tunnels, parking garages, mountains/valleys, urban areas where GPS can be iffy. Or heck, what if GPS goes down? So make the car think it is blocked from the sky. Then need a shield over their antenna(s). Car will think there's simply no-one else around.
The net effect is that your car could never report what you're doing (speed, position) or even record it for later dump. No other cars around you would be able to ID you. This effectively drops your car out of the system.
Then for fun include a small antenna and transceiver with say a USB interface... Write either a standard notebook (windows/linux?) or smartphone (Android) app to have some fun. Have it pull info from everyone around you, maybe fake being someone else, etc. Lots of fun could be had with that app... But it will require some kind of hardware component to do the transmit/receive as well as some interface logic/circuitry to talk to a computer or smartphone.
Remember the barry’s campaign slogan, “Where’s MY pie?” He’s found an endless banquet!
"Hey, Goodlooking. You got plans for later this evening? I know a great little detailing shop. What do you say? You up for a some romantic suds & shine?"
I’ve got so many damn controls on my cars dash that even after two years, I don’t know how to turn the interior light on aside from opening the door.
A government controlled vehicle kill-switch for persons it does not like.
What could go wrong with that? :-)
Don't expect to listen to your radio though.
So the Nation Highway Transportation Administration wants to get their slice of Homeland Security Pie?
I like it. You could sell it as a safety item. With this white noise generator no distracting cell calls/texts while driving. ;-) Radio? Just hook up your MP3 player or smartphone and play some recorded playlists...

Saw this coming with those black boxes and On Star back during that oh so innocent Cash for Clunkers. Now, any dissenter can be Hastingscided at a click of a mouse.
