“Mental disorder” is the leading “diagnostic group” for disabled people receiving federal disability insurance benefits, with 35.5 percent of all disabled beneficiaries having such a disorder, according to the latest Annual Statistical Report on the Social Security Disability Insurance Program.

The report provides a statistical profile of the 10,088,739 disabled beneficiaries who were receiving federal disability benefits as of December 2012.

Those 10,088,739 disabled beneficiaries were almost double the 5,044,388 disabled beneficiaries who had been in the program as of December 1995.

In Washington, D.C., according to the report, 43.2 percent of disabled beneficiaries as of December 2012 had been diagnosed with a mental disorder. In Massachusetts—which led the nation in this metric—50.1 percent of disabled beneficiaries had been diagnosed with a mental disorder. …

Do these stats refer to both S.S.I. and S.S.D.I. combined?

Just like any doctor shopping, if you look long enough you can find a psychologist, psychiatrist that will give you the diagnosis you want.

Here’s my theory: I was actually thinking about this today at work. 20 years ago or so, drug addicts and alcoholics used to go on disability. Well, you give an addict a check every month and I don’t have to tell you what often happens. It got so bad there was an exposé on 20/20 or one of those shows. People were outraged. So they stopped, but instead slapped mental illness diagnoses on a lot of them so they could get checks. Just my theory.

Yeah. Most of those used to get disability for their substance abuse problems. When they closed that door, they were all diagnosed with a mental problem as their disability....

It would seem that people in red states have fewer mood disorders, with some exceptions.
Seriously, now I have a question:Who knows anything about the PTSD epidemic? I always associated post traumatic stress disorder with soldiers who had been in combat, or others who had had extreme experiences—maybe being held hostage, serious child abuse, being a victim of a violent crime, etc. But now it seems like every other person running around Everett claims to have it. Does anybody know anything about this?

Yes, you are correct. My sister, a druggie, is one of them. But she is also bi-polar, has threatened to kill people, and is border-line schizoid.

So the question remains: do people use marijuana and opiates to self-medicate? Or does the decades-long use of these types of drugs cause a person to mentally degenerate?

I actually have a neighbor on crazy pay. The girl's entire family; most are on disability for this or that; they really work at getting on it; then start pumping the kids out. They are adept at getting on all the programs, energy assistance, quest cards, on and on. The same neighbor had a couple horses, ya on food stamps and can afford to feed horses.

We live in a rural community, little store that charges 3x the price for everything. Reason is the owner, well half his business is with food stamps. He has to charge higher prices to make up what he has to reimburse the feds for taking quest card food stamps.

Over whelms me to see it getting worse with time too; soon as they get on assistance, they are dems for sure come November.

You misspelled “stupidity.”

During the seventies and eighties the Federal court system forced the majority of long term mental health care facilities to be shut down. Where do you think people who used to be cared for in that way are now? Some are homeless, some just died, and others are on the dole.

No doubt some are better off, but for many it would be better for them to be in care facilities because some of them have mental issues that need not be permanent if they get more intensive treatment for a time.

Not that there isn’t fraud, but fraud is neither the whole story nor even the biggest part of it.

Go spend a few weeks walking around in one of our inner city crime areas.
(I will advise you to carry)

Now ask yourself how many kids growing up there will make it out without experiencing violent crime or having some of the people close to them killed? We have our own little third world type hell holes, but with televisions and air conditioning.

I had a family member who lived on disability because of mental illness. It was plenty real. He couldn’t take care of himself when things got bad and didn’t survive until the age of 30. He was a sweetheart.

If you think that number in DC is bad for disability, you should see what it is for the Congressmen.

I have had a mood disorder since 2008. And I will have PTSD in 2016. Right now it’s still TSD.

Disability Fraud

On the streets of the ‘hood, it's called “crazy money” and people intentionally act crazy to get it.

Here’s the blunt truth....I lived in Arlington for three years and could observe the whole trend in DC while walking around at various historic sites (the mentally ill hang out at the same sites in DC).

Back in the 1980s....a big segment of the 18-to-25 year old folks (guys and gals) of DC....did cocaine and just about every heavy drug possible. Those who survived...are today around the city. These folks are now 30 years older, and range from 48 to 55 years old.

Basically, they burned out their braincells...can’t think....can’t do much of anything....and just kinda survive as best as they can. A fair number are street folks....who just get by with a blanket or sleeping bag. The various charity groups think that feeding and giving one-night shelter is the best strategy.

The truth is...this group of ten thousand folks need to be institutionalized and tossed out of the city. No one does that because legal eagles will swoop down to defend them and it’d take billions in legal costs to dump some folks into the only place where they fit.

If you want to really see these disabled dimwits....step outside of Union Station and make a one-block circle. There’s one park about half-a-mile from the Library of Congress where most of them hang out all day. If you stand there....you’d swear they were zombies.

What we need is a simple new category for mentally disabled. You can’t collect the check or cash it....unless you enter a government-approved facility, and live within its gates. Then the guy would have to make a decision on his own....avoiding the legal eagles who continually prey upon his stupid position in life, and dump this poor sap where he needs to be.....not on the streets of DC or any major town.
