NEW YORK (AP) -- McDonald's reported disappointing sales for its fourth quarter Thursday, as the world's largest hamburger chain saw fewer customers visit its restaurants.

The Oak Brook, Ill.-based company says global sales slipped 0.1 percent at established locations. In the U.S., where it recently revamped its Dollar Menu to include items that cost a little more, the figure fell 1.4 percent.

So that patties have shrunk? Good - I thought I had lost my mind. When I saw the older pictures from the 50's and 60's where a svelte woman is eating a cheeseburger only, I wondered how on earth it was enough for a lunch. Have we gotten that piggy over time?

For burgers, I actually like Wendy's. I wish Chick-Fil-A was closer...

I think they should have a classic menu. And then, possibly, have a rotating newer menu.

I don't eat McD's too much but when I do, I want a cheeseburger. The same cheeseburger I had when I was 7.

The feel to the Obama’s by taking half the fries out and putting in apples no one wanted.

Nope, the hamburgers were 10 cents and the cheeseburgers were 15 cents. Not sure what the fries cost.

As a kid and we lived in a very nice area and at the time going to McDonald’s was a big treat! Also at that time there was no indoor seating, only a few outdoor round metal tables, and you could only order at an outdoor window.

You couldn’t pay me to eat McDonald’s garbage..

If most people knew how many illegals that places hires, they’d never step foot in one again.

Yeppir. We used to go to Austin or Kerrville just to eat there. The one in San Antonio isn’t as good, but it’s close enough.

For the pancake lovers- Ever had Pan Kits? (Morrison Milling in Denton, Tx) I’ve never had a pancake that can touch them. They’re soooo good.

yes the cost of eating at McD’s is way too high for the product you get.

didn’t used to be that way, it used to be a reasonable priced place

even their dollar menu is now largely composed of more expensive items!

this Obama economy is continuing to spiral down and down, and so many people cannot afford to eat at McD’s anymore! McD needs to at least offer a few affordable items for awhile!

Good Catch!

It does have that blocky, slightly out of proportion, LEGO look, doesn't it?

Their food is not the greatest but they have enough variety that you could stand to eat there once a week or so. The problem is a lot of sit down place rival their prices.

Their egg McMuffins are very good

A fresh made egg McMuffin is pretty good.

But once they sit for a few minutes they metamorphose into a lukewarm, soggy lump and lose their appeal for me.

However, as another poster commented about the hamburgers. once McD's started making their sandwiches from food cooked/stored in those little plastic drawers the quality, texture and flavor suffered. IMHO that goes for the breakfast sandwiches too.

“I think the first McDonald’s hamburger I had cost 15¢ and fries cost 10¢ - and no sales tax either!”

Same with me. And cheeseburgers were .17, milk shakes a quarter and when big mac came out it was .45 .

Yes they shrunk them in the 80s which lead to the Wendy’s where’s the beef campaign.. McD’s paddy went to 1/10th a lb from 1/8 a lb I believe. May have shrunk again for all I know.

Years ago my employer used Restaurant Associates as a food provider. RA had about 3 levels of food: gourmet, healthy and nutritious and salty and fatty. Among the minorities, no one but no one would touch the healthy food. They all gravitated towards the junk food. So the company decided to ditch the healthy food because it was a big money loser.
So, it's possible that McD’s just couldn't get rid of the healthy stuff. You can lead a horse to water...

There's a book I just started to read SALT, SUGAR, FAT by Michael Moss (Random House 2013). Its subtitle is "how the food giants hooked us". It's about how the food processors are deliberately poisoning us by hooking us with their unhealthy processing and additives.

That's why I state that as people begin to catch on, some do change their eating habits. Knowledge of food is improving, and as a result of demand it's actually getting easier to find pure foods.

Oooh, salt, sugar and fat! Well, I don’t have a sweet tooth but love salt & fat. Unfortunately, I think this book has a puritanical bend to it so I shall not be reading it. Am currently rereading the brilliant “Alice B. Toklas Cookbook,” with its luscious concentration of fat, fat and more fat - with some salt and booze thrown in for good measure. Miss Toklas lived to a healthy old age.
