I havent seen my copy of Men On Strike for several weeks. I kept careful watch on the book until I finished interviewing her, but after that it disappeared into the Bowyer-Family-Book-Sharing Vortex from which it has not yet emerged. Thats because it is an easy read about a topic which is interesting in both a social science theory way, and in a figuring out how to get by in the current world kind of way.
Men on Strike is pretty much what the title says it is, a book about how many men have decided not to participate in certain areas of life, most notably in school, family, and increasingly in work. What separates the work of Helen Smith, a psychologist who deals with men like the ones she writes about in her book, is the lack of scoldiness that you might find in the similar work of say Kay Hymowitz Manning Up. For Smith, the men are in large part acting rationally. Theyre more John Galt than they are Peter Pan. The book could as well have been titled Andros Shrugged, if ancient Greek titles sold books.

Boys and young men are no less rational, or capable of adapting to incentives, than girls and young women are. They are, in fact, adapting very well to the incentives for female power and independencewhich inevitably also serve as disincentives to male reliability and self-sacrifice.(continued)

The wussification of Amerika continues....
The world today teaches males at a young age that women have “options”, men have obligations.
I went Galt 15 years ago.
I work alone now.
Well if you take away our ability to do our jobs of being Men and Father’s and tell us we are going to do it the woman’s way then no wonder blokes hang out the ‘Gone Fishing’ sign. If I didn’t love my wife and kids so much I would have gone outside and spent my entire life in the shed or bought a decent boat and gone fishing.

Society has collapsed. Civilization is dying. The future is going to be very grim. That’s “progress”
It’s a stupid and myopic analysis that takes this long ( that part excerpted) to mention religion, if it gets around to it at all. Remember Max Weber?

I agree. These anecdotes depict the craven.
I was taught that men have obligations, and I was eager to embrace them.
Old school, but what the heck.
Thanks 2D...a few years ago people wondered why fewer men were in college.....now we know...men are not welcome...
From the article: “The rewards for men in the fields of marriage, education, career, and fatherhood are just a lot less than they used to be, and the cost and dangers are just a lot higher. So theyre opting out, and whether people want to believe this or not, its happening.”
Yup. Women tend to forget that older men talk to younger men.
I find all the hubbub over homosexual state marriage to be a bit surreal: the real issue that will affect society in the future is that heterosexual men are abandoning it in droves.

Naaah. That's Hope and Change.
white men in particular.
Same here. Have my own company and my biz partner owns a minority. I was self-motivated after working for more than dozen jobs were my bosses were either morons or control freak feminazis who couldn’t get laid so they vent their frustration on me as a dude. Said I could do a better job..and I did.
American females no longer want men, they want boys. So men are letting them have what they want. What they are upset about that real men still exist who don’t need them. THAT is intolerable, and must be destroyed.
For one thing, men don’t need it as much as women, except for the professions. I can’t tell you how many male high school dropout or just grads I know or have known who were millionaires. Know many rich females without a degree?
