COLD SHOCK: Warming up your car illegal!

WASHINGTON – The recent nationwide cold snap isn’t just making Americans uncomfortable. It’s turning some into lawbreakers.

The shocking news of state and local regulations that make it illegal to warm up your frozen car is hitting home in Texas, Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia, Colorado, Wisconsin, South Carolina – even some cities in Minnesota.

Who knew it could be illegal to run back inside while your car is warming up in winter – in a practice sometimes called “puffing”?

Many Americans are getting first-hand experience this brutal winter with the latest manifestation of what some call the “Nanny State.”

The reason for such laws is usually linked with the increased threat of vehicles being stolen – and some of them carry hefty fines for enticing car thieves to commit their crimes. The laws are a little fuzzy on the newer technology of “auto-start” vehicles specifically designed for the comfort of their drivers and passengers.

***There are frozen cars in Texas?***

Ever been up around the Amarillo-Dalhart area in the winter?
From Lubbock north to Canada there is nothing but barb wire fences to stop the wind and cold.

I also had a look and came up with these links:

http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t56c035.php
http://www.arcticbreeze-truckac.com/content/no-idle.html#NO

Both of those apply to diesel trucks, probably the same as you found.

I can’t find any link where is says you can’t warm up your car in SC. Therefore I don’t understand the reference to SC in the second paragraph of the article.

With global warming it should never be necessary to warm up the car? </S>

His admonition is the equivalent of saying “The camel’s nose is under the tent,” meaning that the ordinance could eventually be made to apply to private vehicles.

I put a small electric heater, turned on, in my truck with the extension cord sticking out. If it is iced up, I simply plug in a longer extension cord to the one sticking out.

When I plug in that cord to an outlet, the heater comes on and after about 30 minutes the truck is warmed up and the ice melting so I can scrape it off easily.

um... you know you can still lock the door when the engine is running?

why is the assumption the door is unlocked?

My car has a touch pad system on the drivers side door that I can use to get back into the car while I do this.

If I run a car unattended for some reason I lock it up (after finding the spare key set) and have it parked in (blocked) by other vehicles.

Then there is always the increased threat of frost building up inside your windshield while you are driving...waiting for enough heat to come out of the defroster to push it back so you can see.

Stupid law...

So it is illegal to take measures for your health, safety and engine shock?

Don't worry, lavaroise! When your engine croaks because of these laws, the government will step in and take care of the problem for you.

Oh, wait - NO, they won't.

But at least they'll take money from you at gunpoint to replace THEIR government automobile engines when they croak because of these laws...

Yeah, I’m in AA. I got the impression it was a MD law, not specific to a county, but I might’ve missed that.

If we treated car thieves like we used to treat horse thieves...there would be a lot fewer stolen cars!

Frickking statists.

They SAY it is to defer car theft, but we all know the real reason libs want it, is because they think it wastes gas and contributes to AGW.

I spend my own money on gasoline, if I think it is worth using so I don’t freeze for the first ten minutes I drive to work, it is none of their danged business!
