Original post (December 30) -- Around 9:30 a.m. on December 7, University of Minnesota-Duluth student Alyssa Jo Lommel, 19, was found nearly frozen to death on a neighbor's porch. She'd apparently spent the entire night outside while temperatures dropped as low as 17 below zero.

THE BACKSTORY: UMD student Alyssa Jo Lommel tweeted about tequila shots before she was found freezing

More than three weeks later, Lommel remains hospitalized. Her condition has been upgraded to fair, but according to her family, doctors still haven't told her how bad her injuries are.

Her doctor "felt that today it would be good to just tell her about the amputations,"

The doctor "also told her how lucky she was just to be alive, but I really don't think any of that sunk in," Teri Lommel continued. "It took her several minutes before she looked at any of us. Then she started to slowly cry."

Perhaps “this generation” sees nothing but hypocrisy in the law, while you still maintain an illusion of the sacred.

Such a sad story. Young and stupid as most are. The price she paid is very high.

Yeah, you’ll get slammed for it, and you should. That mentality does us no favors whatsoever. People, including you, do things everyday that could go badly. 19 year olds do it in spades.
It’s pure rude cold-hearted jackassery to only be willing to spare a little sympathy for a pretty little 19 year old girl getting her body mutilated if she lives a pious life of perfect decision-making.

Poor kid. I feel sorry for her. One mistake and an aweful price to pay but at least she is alive. It could have been much much worse.

Pray for her.

She almost died. Every year some teenager that hasn’t been taught about alcohol and came from a strict environment drinks too much and dies of alcohol poisoning. Alyssa Jo is lucky to be alive. I know several people that would give everything to have had their children survive the ordeal with just amputations. It is just a tragedy from what many may have learned a lesson.

A lot of people die from one “mistake”.

Perhaps you shouldn’t get personal since you obviously have no idea what I think is sacred or not.

She went out and did it deliberately, she tweeted about it, celebrating it... when did any of this become a mistake?

When I was young and stupid, I had too much to drink on occasion and passed out. Lucky for me I never passed out in -17 degree weather.

I can’t think of a soul I know that didn’t do something stupid in their lives...myself included. And usually alcohol related. I applaud you if you never made mistakes as a young person.

Pretty hard punishment, imho.

People do these things to themselves. She got drunk, underage, and now has to live with the consequences.

Maybe she can warn other kids to stay away from alcohol?

************************************

It might help her to feel that she can make a difference, and that what happened to her is not without meaning. Poor kid. She's only 19.

The intital decision was a mistake in judgement.

Like we all make from time to time.

When I say “sacred” you read to much into that phrase. A column in the ancient world was considered sacred. It represented a confined and condemned prisoner. A thing that was taboo. Rejected by men and condemned by god. Therefor sacred. So don’t get all defensive and “religion forum” on me.

The slams we could give will be nothing compared with the spiritual blowback that such arrogance courts.
