CASSELTON, N.D. — A mile-long train carrying crude oil derailed just a mile before it would have cut through the heart of a small North Dakota town, shaking residents with a series of explosions that sent flame and black smoke skyward. No one was hurt, but officials were evacuating as many as 300 people as a precaution.

Derailed and then hit by another train and fire ensues.

Then the tank cars go bleve(Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion).

“Local residents heard five powerful explosions just a mile outside of the small town of Casselton after a westbound train carrying soybeans derailed, and an eastbound 104-car train hauling crude oil ran into it just after 2 p.m. CST (2000 GMT), local officials said. There were no reports of any injuries.”

I’ll bet it was on the way out here to Anacortes WA.

I'll bet not. This is to the East of the Bakken Field; near Fargo, Minnesota.

"an eastbound 104-car train hauling crude oil"

Correct. It could easily have been on route to that eastern Canadian refinery (in NB?) that was to receive the Bakken oil that burned in Lac Magantic, Que.

The explosion happened shortly after 2 p.m. Monday after a BNSF grain train derailed and crashed into a crude oil train near Casselton, which is 20 miles west of Fargo, causing tank cars to explode in towering mushroom-cloud flames.

More likely one of the several Great Lakes, Midwest area refineries.

From the article:

snip
BNSF spokeswoman Amy McBeth said the train carrying grain derailed first,
then knocked several cars of the oil train off adjoining tracks.

No, pure physics of a couple of century technology (railroads) combined with tank cars not built robustly enough anymore.

No, pure physics of a couple of century old technology (railroads) combined with tank cars not built robustly enough anymore now that rail transport is preferred to pipelines by 0bama (piece be upon him).
