A&E has distanced itself from Phil Robertson, the patriarch in its enormously popular Duck Dynasty series, following his comments about homosexuality. Yet the opinion he expressed, that homosexuality is a sin, is shared by 45 percent of Americans, according to a recent poll.
Fully 78 percent of white evangelical Protestants agree with Robertson, according to the data. They are demographic group analyzed in the poll that is presumably most likely to watch Duck Dynasty.
Scott Collins compares A&E to other networks that have condemned the same traditional world views that make their shows so popular and so lucrative:
Once again, TV finds itself in another cultural hot zone. The Duck Dynasty situation recalls last summers uproar over celebrity chef Paula Deen, who lost her Food Network gig and many sponsorship deals after she admitted she had of course used a racial epithet in the past. . . .
These cases reflect larger rifts in American life call it a split between progressives and traditionalist values.
But the particular problem for the TV industry is that its trying to profit off the same cultural tensions its exploiting. That inevitably leads to problems such as the current one engulfing Duck Dynasty.
The reality programming trend in recent years has made stars out of everyone from bakers to pawnbrokers to catfish-wranglers. That these authentic people have opinions and values that dont always jibe with those of the media elite in New York and Los Angeles isnt necessarily surprising....

What's the surprise? Girl bullies have been refining the technique since the dawn of man.
Paula Deen was railroaded because she said the Mooch ate more than any other guest she’d ever had. Bam! She’s a racist and in the news for a word used 20 years ago.
Phil Robertson shunned Baba Waba for an interview. Bam! His GQ comments from October become front page news and “hate speech” in December. Not a word before he ignored that lisping so called “reporter”.
Plumbers, sewer workers and Roto-Rooter employees?
Great example of how the left operates. Culture and society are constantly changing. In the past things have usually changed very slowly and gradually. The left figured out that they can use the mass media and the education system to make changes quicker. The problem though is these are only shallow, quasi-intellectual changes...they don’t have deep roots nearly anywhere but they’re widespread. Wide and thin . The left then demonizes anyone who dares to poke their head out of this shallow pool and point out just how little substance there is to it.
That’s a keeper !!!
I might add that much of the left doesn’t know that their own views are shallow.
They sense a threat, and react in the only way which they have found works.
They are fundamentally insecure.
Sure, you can fire someone for any reason, but the hundreds of thousands of lawyers out there are like sharks in the water these days and will sue at any provocation. I worked at two different states’ unemployment offices for many years and I saw it more and more throughout the years.
Paula Deen wasn’t loved and admired like Phil Robertson. I think they bit off more than they can chew this time.
Ask 100 million heterosexual men whether they prefer male anus to female vagina.
When we get those results, back, then I'd be impressed.
45% "approval"? My ass.
If you did my survey, I bet it's 98% the other way.
What heterosexual male "likes" another man's anus?
If they DO, they're not normal, or heterosexual.
I'm pretty sure Andrew "Dice" Clay covered this in the 80s.
This has been said of Norman Lear when he introduced Americans to Archie Bunker (UK's "Till Death Us Do Part"): He expected Americans to ridicule Archie. Instead, they identified with him and agreed with his views.
Mainly because he made Meathead such a loathable loser, mooching off of Archie and constantly whining about everything.
Yes, yes he did. His wording was a bit different, though...
“nd A&E is panicking over what to do with them. “
Probably a ploy to boost ratings.
The best line from Andrew Dice Clay.
Sitting with his Girlfriend,
No one is speaking...
Gf asks “What are you thinking about ?”
Dice replies “If I wanted you to know what I was thinking, I’d be talking”
Fifty IQ knuckle-dragging liberal apes will never understand why normal people don’t want to eat feces.
And this is why we need an open-minded Supreme Court (certainly not this one, which just loves the whole “employment at will” thing) that will extend First Amendment protections to *private* employer-employee relationships. Just relying on the free market isn’t enough, because businesses often take the cowards way out.
I guess you should move to Western Europe.
Only forty-five per cent think sodomy and/or fellatio is sin??
The polling machine must be made by the same company that made the voting machines that got O back in office again. /s
AIDS tells you whether it's right or not. You don't need Robertson now to learn that.
