Long Island man arrested in multiple 'knockout' assaults
WABC New York ^ | December 17, 2013 | N.J. Burkett

AMITYVILLE, New York (WABC) -- Law enforcement sources tell Eyewitness News, a 20-year-old Long Island man is under arrest and is expect to be charged with up to 7 counts of 'knockout' assaults that date back to April of 2013.

Darryl Mitchell of Amityville is expected to be charged in the assaults of residents, at least two of them elderly in the Babylon to Amityville area.

Darryl Jones says it came out of nowhere. A single, roundhouse punch to the face that left him stunned. And a gash above his eye that took seven stitches to close.

"It I wasn't strong enough, I probably would've passed out," Jones said.

He told Eyewitness News he was walking home from the grocery store at three in the afternoon when a young man came walking toward him.

"He was walking on the sidewalk and I moved out of the way just to step into the street and he stood in front of me holding up his hands and hit me in the face," adds Jones.

Eyewitness News has learned exclusively tonight that Darryl Mitchell will be charged with half a dozen assaults that go back as far as April.

One of them, on the Long Island Rail Road platform in Amityville. Several others in Babylon and in his own neighborhood, in North Amityville.

Sources say the victims were as young as 17 and as old as 69.

One victim told police, "He just started to punch me in the face multiple times for no reason. And then the black male started to kick me in my body and head. I blacked out a little and all I heard him saying was get off my block."

I'm OK with that too. An unprovoked blow to the head of an unsuspecting and unprepared victim can easily be fatal. There is evidence of cases where it has been fatal. This P.O.S. had just been lucky no one has died.

I hope for jailhouse justice for this guy

...get off my block.

The perp feels so entitled that he thinks he owns the entire city block. I wonder where he gets that mentality from? /s

Knew a guy in college from Amityville. This guy played the knockout game the right way. Instead of defenseless people, he used his opponents on the football field on a FCS level. This guy played running back and would literally knockout defenders regularly. He was later one of the first contestants on “American Gladiators.” This guy was so tough, the show had to change the rules because he was beating the hell out of the show’s regular gladiators.

And how did he know that the victim was not of “his” block?

“......treat young black men as a potential threat and give them a wide berth.”.....

I will give them a wide berth while holding my locked and loaded Glock pointed directly at them.

I blame all this “Knock-Out” game square on the shoulders of odumbo and holder. They have allowed these attacks to happen by there very action of doing NOTHING to stop it. Any leader would be preaching to discourage this type of thing from happening and if we had such a leader you would see it happen. Don't expect it to come from odumbo or holder. (Note I do not use capital letters to use their names, neither of them earned such courtesy).

I have a couple of observations.
They’re trying to ramp up this one sided race war as both a punishment and a provocation.

While the other side doesn’t respond, they can conduct their payback unopposed. +1 for them.

When/if they provoke a response, they can then use the government as an instrument of punishment. +infinity for them, because this is every liberals’ deepest desire.

A good friend and her husband live in Amityville. if this guy had made a move on him he would have had a bullet in his belly. He’s a retired NYC detective and he carries.
Agree with your description of the town. There’s some real wealth there but most of it is a ghetto. I worked there in the 60’s and it wasn’t much different then.

Attempted murder implies intent. It might be overcharging, but it gives the prosecutor some leverage.

The problem is that we punish assault too lightly. Especially when the perp is one of Holders’ people.

“Attempted murder implies intent. “

The intention of the “knockout game” is to hit someone hard enough to instantly render them unconscious. If that isn’t premeditated attempted murder I don’t know what is.

MacDonald pointed out in one of his novels (and I’ll bet dollars to donuts he is right) that the difference between a blow hard enough to knock a man out and one hard enough to kill is very small.

Thus, if you intend to hit me hard enough to knock me out, I *have* to assume you may hit hard enough to kill thereby justifying the use of deadly force *if* *possible*.

All that matters is what a lawyer can convince a jury.

This dude has an airtight defense. "Knockout Games" are a myth. Since the Knockout Game doesn't exist, the perp couldn't have attacked anyone in a Knockout Game.

Gawd, I shouldn't been a lawyer.
