Obama: Set Aside Belief That Government Can't Fix Inequality (video)

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Third, we need to set aside the belief that government cannot do anything about reducing inequality. It’s true that government cannot prevent all the downsides of the technological change and global competition that are out there right now -- and some of those forces are also some of the things that are helping us grow. And it’s also true that some programs in the past, like welfare before it was reformed, were sometimes poorly designed, created disincentives to work, but we’ve also seen how government action time and again can make an enormous difference in increasing opportunity and bolstering ladders into the middle class. Investments in education, laws establishing collective bargaining and a minimum wage -- (applause) -- these all contributed to rising standards of living for massive numbers of Americans.

"we need to set aside the belief that government cannot do anything about reducing inequality."

WTF?? Where does it say in The Constitution that his job is to 'reduce inequality'?

“Investments in education, laws establishing collective bargaining and a minimum wage — (applause) — these all contributed to rising standards of living for massive numbers of Americans.”

This is BS. Federal investments in education have undermined quality education in the USA, not helped it. Education at the local level without federal intrusion used to be the bedrock of a strong society.

Collective bargaining may have, once upon a time, helped workers to improve their lives and those of their families, but that time has long passed. Corruption in the labor movement, and collusion between labor and politicians, has completely killed the labor movement as the nature of ‘work’ in the USA has changed, and foreign competition has put USA workers against workers around the world.

Lastly, a minimum wage has been a disaster for low skilled and youth workers, and has done nothing for raising the living standards for the lower or middle classes. It has also reduced the jobs available for entry level workers.

As usual, Obama spews liberal ideology without any knowledge of the veracity of his claims!

He and the rats need to be HUNG with this belief.
They need to fully OWN it.

Because, the only way government can “reduce inequality” is at gunpoint.

Yes folks, he really IS that stupid.

No wonder he hid his (undoubtedly awful) academic records.

Probably believes in glow-bull warming too.

Marxist Obama spends all his time going around the constitution. It’s a flawed document, y’know. Doesn’t go far enough in saying what the government MUST do regarding economic “justice” (in his opinion).

They’ve been quoted many times on FR, but Churchill’s words on the subject bear repeating:

The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal
sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of
socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.

Sadly, Obama is a doctrinaire leftist, thus incapable of acknowledging the truth of Churchill’s words.

Because, the only way government can “reduce inequality” is at gunpoint.

And even then, there is no equality unless everyone has a gun!

Of course, only the arbiters of equality, the elite in government, will be allowed the guns to enforce the equality.

They absolutely acknowledge the truth in Churchill’s statement, but Socialism is for the little folk, not for them. They are the Ruling Elite that make the rules but do not follow them. They believe they will reap the benefits from their trickle down model, gathering all capital through Central Planning then taking their cut before it reaches the bottom tier.

Obama is proposing The United States of America become like Venezuela.

And the so-called 'opposition' party enables him to do so, by proposing legislation (amnesty) that will create 20 million new DemocRAT low-information voters.

Poverty before “The Great Society” was 17%. After 50 years and trillions of dollars we have reduced poverty to 17%.

Government can make a difference:

1) Reinstate Glass Steagall to break the power of the big banks and reduce speculation leading to financial collapses. End “too big to fail” policy. Let the failures go through bankruptcy court and their shareholders and bondholders take a bath.
2) End the failed experiment with one sided free trade. Reinstate tariffs of at least 30% on imported goods.
3) Enforce immigration laws.
4) Reduce the regulatory burden.

aside from banning obvious abuses, government has little proper role in the marketplace

especially govt has almost no role in taking over the free marketplace and subjugating American citizens to an economic dictatorship
