Upton to Limbaugh: Maybe you should have ‘checked in with us’ before criticizing House delay
The Daily Caller ^ | 11/16/2013 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 11/16/2013 6:53:21 PM PST by markomalley

One of the leading critics of Michigan Republican Rep. Fred Upton’s effort to delay the onset of certain provisions of Obamacare has been conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

“This would be a tone-deaf disaster if the Republican leadership lets Fred Upton ascend to the chairmanship of the House energy committee,” Limbaugh said on his radio show earlier this week. “This is exactly the kind of nannyism, statism, what have you, that was voted against and was defeated last week. No Republican complicit in nannyism, statism, can be rewarded this way.”

On Hugh Hewitt’s radio show on Friday night, Upton suggested Limbaugh check with him before launching into his criticism, pointing to the reactions from conservative groups and the media to dispute Limbaugh’s notion.

Partial transcript as follows:

HEWITT: OK, now you have tempted me into breaking my no first name rule, because I’m going to use two of them. So Fred, yesterday, Rush urged the House not to touch this, because it in essence, it’s throwing a lifeline to the President and saving a bill that’s collapsing, don’t get near it, don’t ruin the brand, go for full repeal. What’s your response to that?
UPTON: Well, a couple of things, and you know, it would have been nice if he had maybe checked in with us and gotten information. We had a lot of groups, Club for Growth and others endorse our bill. A couple of things — first of all, what do you say to those millions of people that are all of a sudden out of luck come January 1? That’s not what we ought to be doing. We ought to be thinking about those people. The other thing is I’m just looking at the headlines today, Hugh. And in The Wall Street Journal, I mean, these are headlines that are like war is over. ‘Obama Retreats On Health Rules,’ left to right, right underneath the banner. New York Times: ‘In A Reversal, Obama Moves To Avert The Cancellation Of Health Policies,’ and it’s got a pretty sour face in his picture right underneath it, right underneath the banner. USA Today: ‘Health Law Shakes Presidency,’ left to right. Washington Times: Same picture of the president, ‘The Obamacare Retreat.’ Washington Post: Picture of a — not very flattering pictures of the president, ‘Obama Offers a Insurance Fix,’ ‘And you know, that’s on me. I mean, we fumbled the rollout on this health care law.’
HEWITT: Yeah.
UPTON: We’ve done in a week’s time what a shutdown and everything else, where we didn’t have the numbers, let’s face it, to try and reverse the fix that we’re in.

As for why Upton put the delay at just a year, Upton said that was the best way to ensure it got passed.

“We wanted to pass it,” he said. “That was our objective. We wanted to provide some immediate relief to the people that were bitterly concerned about the prospects of their own plan. We thought a one year was good enough that we would not only keep most of the Republicans, and we did, but have a good chance of getting a number of Democrats as well, which we did. Remember, we won by more than 100 votes. Had we done a longer period, it might have been more of a showpiece than an actual piece that you could actually get done, and we wanted to, again, two days ago, before the president undercut us with what is in essence his executive order. We had more than 300 votes for this.”

Rush sells stuff - enriches himself - doesn’t spend a dime on activism - and is dellusional with regards to his influence.

Back around ‘98 when he came out with his father’s sacred honor speech, I sent him a note asking where his was - 14 years on and I still don’t see a shred of it.

He’s happy to sit by like so many talking heads and just comment on America’s crumbling. I was in Washington 9/12/09 marching with hundreds of thousands of other patriots. Rush wasn’t there. He’s never there.

Not surprising that Upton acts this way. After all, he pretty much lets that alien-looking Waxman run his committee.

Well the south end of a north bound show horse.

Uptons bill allows ANYONE to buy catastrophic-type plans

Those plans are going to magically come into existence under these uncertain times and with Obamacare still in effect, how?

wether they were previous purchasers off the individual market or not.

Please read the points I've made throughout the thread.

That would mean all Emp-Plans that were cancelled would see t heir employees be able to buy old “junk” plans and ensure next to no one lands on the exchanges (which will ensure the dwath spiral)

The Employer Plans have not been cancelled yet because Barry waived his wand and extended them to Jan 1 2015. But you're missing my points:

- Individual plans that have been cancelled are DEAD. They are not coming back.

- Uptown Girl's bill does nothing but gives the Dims a life jacket, because the state insurance commissioners and the insurance companies are not obligated to re-instate the plans. So Dims are going to say the Republicans are in the pockets of the evil insurance companies and Dims will control D.C. just like they did in Barry's first 2 years.

- Uptown Girl's bill doesn't take into account the roiling uncertainty that is happening right now in (what's left of) the healthcare market. So any proposal that passes is negligible because Obamacare is still the law.

- The Employer plans are going to get cancelled en masse next fall and RINO pukes like Upton is clearly ignoring the Kraken that will be unleashed. Nobody is talking about the Employer plans.

wow, I am seriousness shocked at the stupidity of people here on this thread, its like you all have your heads so far up your own rears you cant see reality when its right in front of your face.

You all say you are happy with Cruz for his actions, and would have been extremely happy with a 1-year delay outcome had it happened... yet a bill that would do just that while simultaneously destroying the exchanges gets offered and you all are venomously against it?

Really, just think of how freakin dumb the position is though by seeing who is for/against it:

~ Tea Party members - For Upton’s bill, and voted as such
~ Progressives - Against it is an understatement, as they are ranting and railing that it would kill Obamacare (calling it the “poison pill”)

...and you all are taking the side of the Progressives because, why exactly? Do you even know?

It effectively repeals Obamacare, sends the exchanges into a death spiral and ensures Obama cant do his show-only non-fixes to get empty credit with no actual results.

Its EVERYTHING Republicans could want (outside of the still impossible at this time full-repeal) and you all are bitching about it without even knowing WHY you are bitching about it?

Like I said, just flat out shocked by the stupidity of your stance.

Huh?
We all have our talents. We all have our callings. It is absurd to try and impose YOUR desires on others. In fact, that is the core of LIBERALISM not conservatism.
In a free society, Conservatives must populated education and business groups and local and state governments and YES the media, and make the conservative arguments that need to be made.
Let all of us do it in our own way.
I dare say, knowing little about you, that it is doubtful that you have had as much positive impact as Rush Limbaugh.
Those who have come close to Limbaugh, in that regard, all seem to love the guy, so I doubt you are a contender.

A congressman lecturing a citizen...epic stupid. Upton reminds me of Obama lecturing Republicans to not listen to Limbaugh.

Do any of us really think that this “dumb $h!t Law” Upton and his idiot friends passed is going to do anything to fix the problem of people loosing “the plans they liked?”
Actually, for me Obamacare, in a perverse way, has allowed me to exit the Medicare Advantage Policy I’ve had for eight years, and move to a Medigap Policy. From what I am reading, Obamacare is going to choke Medicare Advantage to death, and absent the cancellation of my existing MA policy, the Medicare Law precludes me moving to Medigap. People who are on Medicare Advantage, are in for a rough ride if Obamacare isn’t repealed, because Obamacare is cutting the funding for MA to the point where doctors won’t see you.

“If the delay was so wonderful, why didn’t the Dims take it during the shutdown?”

Huh? Delay ISNT wonderful - that is why Progressives are crying bloody murder over the Upton Bill now

“It’s better for the insurance companies to keep the cancelled, since they DID abide by “the law” to make them compliant.”

Yes, it is better for InsCos to just allow Obamacare to take full effect, like you are apparently arguing.

But what isnt hurtful for InsCos is the Upton Bill - it would force them to re-up their cheap plans with the healthy on the Individual market (as well as others who want to join in) but the Exchange is stupidly backed by a bailout clause in Obamacare, so they wont be hurt there. The only outcome will be the Death Spiral on the Exchange, while the Individual Market would work fine

“No, they would probably go to Medicaid, and if they don’t qualify, then they’re screwed.”

Huh? The Pre-Exsisting people that Obama railed were uninsured would still be able to go onto the Exchange (unless Obama closed it seeing the impending Death Spiral caused by Upton’s Bill) or yes, if they somehow are covered by the medicaid expansion in 50% of the states, they would do that.

“Still forgetting about the employer plans that will be cancelled as well.”

Again, huh? They would be able to purchase Individual Market plans just like the rest, or are you just ignoring the part where the Upton Bill allows ANYONE to buy catastrophic plans for 2014 (and when it is almost certainly reupped for 2015-beyond, then anyone dropped from their plans later would similarly continue to be able to stay away from the Exchange with affordable options through a Individual market)

“Delaying this is a bad idea. Why would the GOP push this issue away until after 2014?”

Thing to do now is go public with “this needs an up or down vote” in the senate. Put it on Reid’s head and attach the shutdown to him also. Time to put the pressure on the rats.

Getting a year works because you can go into the primaries and election demand a litmus test that if elected you will kill the law. Puts Democrats in a bad position.

“12:36 got to talk about his book”

When would you suggest he talk about his book. After it’s been out for a year? Think, for heaven sakes, you talk your book up a lot when the book is first coming out, that’s if you have any marketing smarts at all. That’s why authors go out on book tours. Rush really can’t do that, as bookstores would be mobbed if they knew Rush was coming to tout his book, so he does it on his program. Now if you have a problem with that you aren’t a very good capitalist.
