AUDIO: McAllister Has Cleo Fields Doing Robocalls For Him (LA 05)
The Hayride ^ | November 15, 2013 | Scott McKay

An interesting development in the Riser-McAllister race: McAllister, who has been infuriating Republican voters across the 5th District (which comprised 68 percent of the primary electorate and by all estimations will be an even larger share of the runoff electorate) by backing a Medicaid expansion, is now firing out robocalls with a rather controversial figure in state Democrat politics.

Namely, former Congressman and failed 1999 Democrat gubernatorial candidate Cleo Fields – whose name came up as the recipient of a $25,000 payoff from disgraced former governor, federal inmate and failed reality TV star Edwin Edwards when the investigation of the latter became public.

The following turned up on a voice mail in the Monroe area…

Cash from Edwin Edwards

Fields achieved considerable notoriety in 1997 when an FBI surveillance videotape showed him accepting a large amount of cash (about $20,000) from former Louisiana Governor Edwin W. Edwards and stuffing it in his pockets. At the time Fields stated that the incident was just an innocent business transaction between friends, and said there was a humorous explanation, which he would make public shortly thereafter. A cloud hung over Fields as an unindicted co-conspirator in Edwards’ criminal trial and in the end Fields refused to deliver the promised “humorous” explanation, stating that at the time of the cash transfer, he was not an elected official, and therefore under no obligation to explain publicly.[2][3]

I remember the very first time that Edwin Edwards ran for the governorship of Louisiana. His opponent was David Treen. Throughout the campaign Treen kept saying that his opponent was a crook. Finally, Edwards retaliated by saying, “Yes, I am a crook. I admit it. The problem is that Mr. Treen is a crook but refuses to admit it!”

Edwards got elected anyway. ;-) Ah, Louisiana politics at its finest!

To the people of Louisiana.

Is this a dirty trick by MacAllister’s opponent?

Please post a reply.

http://lapolitics.com/2013/11/is-fields-robo-calling-for-mcallister/

A voice message obtained by LaPolitics suggests former Congressman Cleo Fields, a Baton Rouge Democrat, is making calls on behalf of political newcomer Vance McAllister, a Republican from Swartz, in the 5th Congressional District. It’s uncertain, however, if Fields is actually involved.

The runoff election is scheduled to begin tomorrow. Voters started receiving the recorded messages today.

You can listen to the robocall by clicking here.

The speaker identifies himself as Fields and states, “I’m calling you to encourage you to please vote for my friend Vance McAllister,” adding he will be a “strong voice for the people of the 5th Congressional District in Washington D.C.”

Before the robocall ends, the speaker concludes, “This is an important election. That’s why I paid for this call.”

A phone message seeking confirmation from Fields was left with his secretary Friday morning at his Baton Rouge law firm. A message was also left with the McAllister campaign.
