I grew up in the era of polio (40’s and 50’s) It is a horrible disease, the news that it is coming back is awful. There were things we could not do because my parents feared we would catch it, things like movies and swimming pools.

I went to school with several kids who caught polio and it was awful to see them when they came back to school. Then years later I learned about “post polio” and I know they are suffering again.

Yeah, how soon we forget. I never knew any kids with polio, but do recall a lot of worried parents, including my own.
When I was 7 or 8 y/o, I was part of the Salk polio vaccine trials in the NYC area.
The shot I received was a placebo and had to do it all over again - ouch!
My enduring memory of all that was the absolute joy my mother expressed when it was announced the vaccine worked.

My sister had polio when she was 5 yo. She was left paralyzed by it for the rest of her life. She lived to be 59. RIP. That’s a long time to be disabled. Polio is a terrible disease.
