I grew up in the era of polio (40’s and 50’s) It is a horrible disease
Yeah, how soon we forget. I never knew any kids with polio, but do recall a lot of worried parents, including my own.
When I was 7 or 8 y/o, I was part of the Salk polio vaccine trials in the NYC area.
The shot I received was a placebo and had to do it all over again - ouch!
My enduring memory of all that was the absolute joy my mother expressed when it was announced the vaccine worked.

I remember standing in block long lines to get vaccinated against polio. What a relief for my parents.
