More than 10,000 feared dead after Philippines typhoon

Tacloban — The death toll from a super typhoon that decimated entire towns in the Philippines could soar well over 10,000, authorities warned Sunday, making it the country's worst recorded natural disaster.

The horrifying estimates came as rescue workers appeared overwhelmed in their efforts to help countless survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan, which sent tsunami-like waves and merciless winds rampaging across a huge chunk of the archipelago on Friday.

Police said they had deployed special forces to contain looters in Tacloban, the devastated provincial capital of Leyte, while the United States announced it had responded to a Philippine government appeal and would send military help.

"Tacloban is totally destroyed. Some people are losing their minds from hunger or from losing their families," high school teacher Andrew Pomeda, 36, told AFP, as he warned of the increasing desperation of survivors.

I saw a letter to the editor recently from a liberal who said Barack Obama can't be a racist be he is “biracial”

I actually don't think Obama is a racist...in the truest sense of the word...he surrounds himself with white people and very few people of color are in his highest levels of power and control...

He is a true ideologue where progressivism / Marxism trumps over all things, regardless of color...he values loyalty far over competence...as long as you are a ideologue comrade you are in no matter what color you skin is as long as your heart and soul are red...

and never brings race into topics.

That being said he excels at using race politics to achieve his goals...

Some people would say that makes him a racist and I can understand that...but IMHO that makes him a Marxist as in "the ends justify the means"

Convoy of Hope is already in the disaster area- they pre-staged when they saw the storm coming, and they have their se Asia staging ground in Manila. They are through the Assemblies of God, and they really know how to do it. Convoyofhope.org

U.S. sends $100,000 in aid - to a county with over 10,000 and climbing, dead...with infrastructure and homes wiped off the face of the earth...from the strongest storm on record to ever hit land...

That piddling amount won't even cover water for one city

SHAMEFUL!

The problem with the Philippines is that they have been/are staunch allies with the U.S. - Now, were they mooslimes - they'd have billions on the way.

http://www.examiner.com/article/u-s-sends-100-000-initial-aid-to-philippines-after-typhoon-haiyan They fought - and died - valiantly for us in WW11 - and then we turned our backs on them after the war - broke every promise made to them. We have NEVER honored our commitment to them. But the muzzies countries get billions...

Thanks to all of the great FReepers who have shown concern for the people of the Philippines.

we did get brief word about our Philippine branch of family - via a relative in Australia - that they 'are safe and well' - (lived in CEBU - but no other word yet as to if they still have their home or businesses -

But thank You, GOd, fro bringing them through alive.

A massive relief operation in the affected area is in full swing. There is little that anyone can do, other then donate money to the relief operations.
This is going to be a very long and painful operation.
The present view on Drudge pretty much says it all.

Mr. Mercat and I worked with Convoy of Hope in the aftermath of Katrina. I didn’t even know their affiliation. They did a good job of just facilitating stuff to go down there. We had an old camper trailer and filled it with bottles of water and medical supplies and drove down there. We didn’t go into NO but went west to where there was the under reported suffering from Rita. Left it all there except the old van and drove home up the old military highway. Quite an experience. I remember before we left, we could smell it. We live in Eastern Kansas and standing out on our second story deck the warm southeast wind wafted up the smell of wet wood and decomp. I’ll never forget that smell.

How interesting that you could smell it all the way in Kansas! But, if you think about how much land and water was churned up, and vegetation crushed, I guess it makes sense.
