Federal health officials are warning pet owners to be cautious about feeding their dogs jerky treats as they continue to investigate a treat-related illnesses that has left nearly 600 dogs dead and sickened more than 3,000 others.
The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday issued an alert to consumers about the illnesses and deaths tied to jerky treats from China. Officials say the exact cause of the illnesses remains unknown.
"This is one of the most elusive and mysterious outbreaks we've encountered," Bernadette Dunham, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, said in a statement. "Our beloved four-legged companions deserve our best effort, and we are giving it."

Because....Free Trade with Communist China works! Says the Free Trader.
If it comes from Communist China...it’s crap
Q. When I buy plain aspirin there is no country of origin listed. When I call the 1-800 number, I’m promised a reply to this concern but the call is not returned.
Is there any aspirin made in the U.S. with American ingredients?
A. An expose in the New York Times Magazine (Nov. 2, 2008) revealed that there are no major generic aspirin manufacturers in Europe or the U.S. Most aspirin is now made in China.
Many over-the-counter medications as well as prescription drugs now come from manufacturers in China, India or other parts of Asia. If country of origin labeling is important for clothing and food, why wouldnt it be even more critical for medicine?

“If it comes from Communist China...its crap”
I agree. Problem is, almost everything does now a days. It’s very difficult to get away from chinese mfg products and a lot of what they produce is low quality CRAP.
Also, we lost one of our cats a few years ago due to IAMS pet food using a “filler” ingredient that was supplied by of course a chinese company. We haven’t purchased IAMS since but these pet food companies are all mixed together, it’s hard to tell who is who. The name on the pet food can means nothing, you need to know who the parent company is. Ive heard a lot of people make there own pet food, sounds like a pain but it gives the pet owner some peace of mind anyway.
“we have given them the keys to our lives.”
Very well put.
I make my own treats these days. My dogs love the crunch of baby carrots. They also love the chewy dried sweet potatoes, turkey and chicken.
I heard about this a few days ago. It seems to be mostly chicken jerky and that there was a recall on several brands earlier this year. They’re still having trouble nailing it down though.
The problem with that practice is that even though you know where the ingredients come from, you can't assume the recipe adheres to pet food nutritional quality standards. Pet food companies must test their foods for nutritional adequacy; there is no comparable assurance regarding home-made foods.
china IS CRAP!
what brand
this article is mum on specifics
there are a lot of dog “treats” that could fit this bill
Never..never...NEVER buy any pet food item of any type that’s made in China!!! Some years ago, factory workers there were caught putting poisonous additives in dog treats, resulting in hundreds of pet deaths in the U.S.
“Made in China” may as well read “Soaked in Acetone.”
Dogs have lived rather well off plain old table scraps for many generations. It's even Biblical actually. If the blasted companies were actually testing quality like they should then pets would not be dieing from Communist China's poison. Due to politicans in very high offices and their families having strong China business connections {VESTED INTEREST in China trade} we are getting the shaft as far as cracking down on China's poisoning.
Yea this is some reporting. WHAT BRAND, FOX?
Jeesh. I guess I’ll Google and find out for myself.
Oh yea, eff China and anything from there, why do we even import any find of food even for pets!
when I was little, 6 or 7, we scoffed at the crap made in Japan, now the crap is made in China and the products from Japan are superior. However, I highly doubt the Chinese will follow Japanese suit and improve, there is a cultural difference exhibited that the Chinese want to keep marketing crap.
I don’t know if this is a possibility in the United States anymore, but here in the Czech Republic we have numerous butcher’s shops - some are national chains, the majority independent - but all of them make and sell their own “treats” for pets, dogs and cats.
If you have a butcher’s shop where you live, be it urban or rural, I’d recommend taking a look there.
I can say I’ve never seen any “Made in China” foodstuffs on the shelves here of local supermarkets; the only place I’ve seen Chinese-made food products are in Asian markets, but the majority of those products originate elsewhere in the far East.
