The principal of a public high school in Washington, D.C. indicated that he would ask the student government to decide whether or not to prohibit clothing featuring the Washington Redskins name something at least one American Indian student thought was offensive.
Principal Pete Cahall of Woodrow Wilson High School told The Washington Post that the decision would be placed in the hands of student council members, who would have the power to decide on behalf of all students, collectively whether the Redskins moniker is offensive.
Ive got no dog in the fight, he told The Washington Post. If nothing else, its a learning opportunity.
He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
One American Indian student told Cahall that the name Redskins was offensive a belief shared by President Barack Obama, who recently said it would be wise for the Washington-based NFL team to consider changing it. Since Obamas pronouncement, various commentators have weighed in on the issue, including NBC sportscaster Bob Costas, who said the name was offensive and should be changed.
Some of the pressure to change the name comes from illegitimate sources, however. A New York state assemblywoman recently told The Daily Caller that self-proclaimed Oneida Nation leader Ray Halbritter is not actually an Oneida. (RELATED: Documents: Anti-Redskins Indian leader not a legitimate member of his tribe)
Redskins owner Dan Snyder supports keeping the moniker and maintains that most American Indians do as well.
I blatantly stole that for my facebook page.
The level of stupidity just keeps rising. I think we have reached the event horizon and cannot recover.
More than first amendment....there is the issue of property rights, called the most sacred by John Adams no less.....
The name is a big part of the equity value of the privately owned Redskins franchise.
Some American Indian folks consider it an honor. Some consider it a shaming taunt. The ultimate answer is not even social, except that society can be a vessel and conduit of it, if it chooses. The ultimate answer is spiritual. In general, the “honor” viewpoint should be encouraged. There should be more “pride” but not egotistical or self worshiping pride, rather pride of being a creation of God. (The idea that some faceless “evolution” got us where we are is a big honor sapper.)
Quite alright. I appropriated the general idea from a Twitter posting in the first place:
Matt @MDaniels_BR 23h Washington Redskins to Drop "Washington" From Name Because its More Insulting. #NFL #govtshutdown #lol #Redskins
I’m offended that Indians have multi-billion dollar tax free gambling empires in states that outlaw gambling.
Well, the American Indian reservation thing was part of a deal between the US Federal Government and various groups of American Indians.
I think we should spend less time being jealous and more time thinking how we can improve one another’s (and our own) lot.
Don’t be so sure of that - the types who get into student government tend to be the liberal control freaks. That’s probably more true in college, but don’t be surprised to see misguided “do-gooderism” from them.
On his radio show last night Dennis Miller said all they have to do is change their logo to a potato. Then a caller suggested they just add an “a” (Readskins)
Funny stuff!
The irony of this being done at Woodrow Wilson High School is obviously lost on the Principal.
Yep ... I read on another thread that in an interview he said, "The palefaces are very insensitive."
What about O. Henry's book, Ransom of Red Chief?
Washington REDCOATS!!
...still fighting against the American people!
Government school is child abuse.
Do these 50 IQ morons at Woodrow Wilson High School know that democrat Woodrow “KKK” Wilson resegregated the federal government?
If those Redskins- err...Injuns- err...Native Am...whatever had a bigger defense budget and better command and control, they’d still own this continent! < /sarc >
How about they start having "accidents"?
Not enough Henry Bowmans in the US to effect that sort of change.
