Reading the book “This Town: Two Parties and a Funeral” (really informative) and it really explains this “brand” phenomenon. These people look at themselves as “a brand” and focus on how people perceive that “brand”.
For instance, Candy does not care about the answer to her question. She is seeking affirmation from other “journalist”. The question is meant for the dinner party chatter. Just like the debate last year.

It’s blackmail for Harry, Barry, and the press to say it’s blackmail. It’s really the law as Barry would say. The law of the land is for the House of Representatives to send bills over for a vote and for the Senate to vote and then if it is approved to send it to the president to sign or not to sign. It’s quite simple. Alas, the blackmailers want a pork bill with everything for everybody in it. They don’t care about what is best for the country. They care about their power over the people. They wanna know everything about everybody. They wanna control everything about everybody. The blackmailers need to be shut down.
