A dashboard camera in a state trooper's car has captured the dramatic moment a father taking his children on a road trip pulled out a gun and shot an officer who then returned fire and killed him.
John Van Allen, 34, was driving with three of his children when he was pulled over on Interstate 84 east of Portland, Oregon by Trooper Matt Zistel, 26, for speeding.
But what was supposed to be a routine traffic stop soon escalated into violence when Van Allen emerged from the car and, despite Zistel urging him to get back inside, pulled out a gun......
The dramatic footage was released to The Oregonian after a public information request from the paper following the August 29 death.

I can only view this from my 2'x3' smartphone screen....looks like the guy is wearing a mask...is he African American?
It certainly makes one wonder how many more of those so-called innocent blacks have been killed by cops? The ones that were only carrying a remote for their tv or a chocolate bar.
He’s AA —
In my province, the RCMP started to tag everybody for going slightly over the speed limit, but some judge slapped them for it and told them that he wouldn’t even look at any case of speeding that wasn’t at least 10km over the speed limit.
That’s when they changed their policy.
Perhaps the perp knew things that he had done and assumed the officer was stopping him for one, or more of those things.
Very good possibility you are correct.
That cop did NOT hit the guy....
look at the video... if the perp had got hit in the chest, he would NOT have been moving around like that.
What’s up with this?
Not enough info here. 76 in a construction zone could be dangerous, depending on what is going on and how the zone is set up. I'm not willing to give this Trayvon any benefit of the doubt.
“taking his children on a road trip”
Hmmm...outstanding warrants? domestic kidnapping?
Around here, constructions zones frequently drop to 50. 76 would be 26 over that limit. You wouldn't pull over someone for driving 26 mph over the speed limit?
If you listen to the video the cop says “I told you, you were speeding”.
My guess is he felt put upon by the cop and was retaliating for the injustice of a black man being stopped.
Goes back to the trayvon case and the hard feelings Obama is encouraging, IMO.
Forgetting all of the speculation at what happened here and taking another view in the interest of study -
Apparently, this man was shot in the chest and died while driving away from the scene. Notice how he continues to fight and engage after receiving a fatal wound, to my eye showing no signs of injury. It’s another interesting study in combat dynamics and shows you just how hard it can be to stop a determined aggressor. It would be my assumption that the officer had no idea that he had scored a fatal hit on his target and therefore was obligated to continue to engage. You can see how quickly things can go seriously wrong.
The speed limit in a construction zone is usually 55 or less. the guy was doing 20 mph over the limit.
It will be interesting to see the toxicology reports.
So is it ok to shoot a cop if the traffic stop is not "routine"?
This is not a good thing for conservatives and gun owners. This guy was a vet, so it will reinforce Homeland security’s policy of targeting vets and it could create even more momentum for the VA medical establishment to confiscate vets’ guns. Even though he’s black, he might have held anti-government views.
Warrents?
The guy did get hit in the chest and died a short way down the road.
The real cause of death in the majority of gun shots is blood loss, which takes time. Especially when you have a bunch of adrenaline in the blood stream.
The 9mm round is not very effective IMO. My guess is the Trooper hit him with a 9mm. A .45 would have put him down.
Theres no evidence of a construction zone in the video.
Might as well say it was aliens.
