GOP Waking Up to a New Reality

The media and the DC establishment are abuzz with reports that Senate Republicans recently lashed out at Texas Sen. Ted Cruz over the government shutdown. New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte confronted Cruz with copies of ads run by an outside conservative group against her over her vote to allow Sen. Harry Reid to gut the ObamaCare defunding provisions of the House-passed Continuing Resolution. She demanded that Cruz explain his "strategy" over the defunding fight.

It would be more interesting to hear Sen. Ayotte's and other Republican Senators' strategy for reversing the government leviathan that is engulfing us. In 1996, the last time the government was forced to shutdown, the total national debt was just over $4 trillion. Today, it is approaching $17 trillion. In the 6 years that Republican controlled both chambers of Congress and the White House at the dawn of this century, federal spending growth was double that under the Clinton Administration.

What is the mainstream Republican strategy to deal with that?

I was never a big fan of the ObamaCare defunding tactic backed by Sens. Cruz and Lee. It at least had the benefit of being an actual tactic, though, as opposed to what I've seen from most Senate Republicans. "Statesmen" like Sens. McCain and Graham want to build up a surveillance state, while others like Sen. Corker want to assist the federal government to greater regulate the financial sector. Sen. Rubio wants to up-end the rule of law and help Democrats enroll more voters, doing next to nothing to stem the tide of illegal immigrants.

For all its shortcomings, at least the position of Sens. Cruz and Lee was in defense of individual liberty. Does it really matter if there was an "endgame" to defend liberty?

That whole talk about "end game" is preposterous. Cruz is a Harvard lawyer, law clerk to the Supreme Court, accomplished legal counsel. He knows how to strategize. The end game is that one side caves first. Cruz is hoping that it won't be Republicans, but if it is, it won't be because of him. Whether he is willing to agree to negotiate a one year delay to Obamacare, I don't know, but to me that would be the best thing to push for. Let us go to the voters in 2014 on the issue, and let them decide. If they want to go socialist, they can go to hell, but I still believe there are enough there to get rid of Harry Reid and get us the Senate. Then the strategy is REPEAL, REPEAL, REPEAL.

Smart people don't describe their moves in advance. Why does everyone want to know the end game? Did Bobbie Fischer tell Boris his moves ahead of time?

Well said! Thank God for Cruz who took the fight to Obama and Reid instead of just lying down and surrendering!

I hope Sen.Coryn has a primary challenger!

Amen! These Senators were elected to lead, not to cast meaningless votes that turn the nation over to Socialism!

These cowards always have a good reason for surrendering!

Obamacare is a disaster, no one is joining it and it is going to be an albatross around the Democrats neck in 2014.

The British during the Battle of Britain didn't have an 'end game' they just held on, knowing they couldn't surrender.

Hilter made a crucial error and thought they were finished and attacked the Soviet Union.

You never know what error your enemy will make that give you a victory, but you have to keep fighting.

Maybe the ditz ought to pay more attention to the people she "represents".

Perhaps she should go back and review her campaign speeches, and pause to consider the promises she made to the voters who put her in the U.S. Senate.

Ted Cruz might just tell every wobbly Republican to do just that, when they challenge him.

She should have confronted Mitch McConnell to demand that he explain his capitulation strategy that she fell for.

Initially, I had high hopes for her, which has been going down a lot. I’ve thought for quite some time that she’s been hanging around McCain & Graham too long; and, therefore, if she didn’t initially share their views, she definitely has been siding with them on a lot of issues.

Gov Palin saw something in her and endorsed her. It’s unfortunate she got in the “wrong crowd” and the GOPe instead of staying with the Tea Party folks.
Just my $.02
