In the wake of the government's inability to pass a budget, the government officially began the process of shutting down nonessential services for the first time in 17 years. This includes sending home nearly a third of the governments 2.1 million-person workforce.
National parks will be shut down. The Internal Revenue Service will temporarily suspend audits and will not staff telephone support lines. Many of the nations federally-run attractions, like the Smithsonian and the National Zoo, will be closed (privately-funded museums and zoos, of course, will remain open). Federally backed loans will not be available for rural communities and small business owners, the President said last Friday.
Good deal! Finally, a way to prevent the government from spending our hard-earned tax dollars on things that the government admits are nonessential. The larger question is why the government spends money on these programs and activities to begin with. If they truly are nonessential, then let the American taxpayer keep more of their money throughout the year and stop wasting our money on useless endeavors.

If they aren’t “essential”, why the hell are we paying for them? Kinda like union jobs where guys sit around getting paid for doing nothing? WTH?
Good going Republicans ,Im glad Republicans didnt back down.
What’s essential government services? only military and border control . keep all that other communist trash government shut down
Im so happy the stupid gov is shut down!
Im glad the government is shut down. none of the government is needed except for the military and border control and that is it , get rid of the IRS, EPA, FEC, FCC, gov schools, NASA( the global warming hoax pushers), TSA, NSA, PBS, national parks, NPR etc , get rid of all that government trash
What will we do without the IRS oppressing us conservatives and Republicans?

Government Shutdown Notice
Due to the Federal Government shutdown, NOAA.gov and most associated web sites are unavailable. However, because the information this site provides is necessary to protect life and property, it will be updated and maintained during the Federal Government shutdown.
That saves money?
After the 1995 to 1996 shutdowns all those FED government employees got back pay, even the ones who were shutdown and got off those weeks.
Afterward the GOP congress was too cowardly to not do it in an election yaers, plus they took a beating over it.
It cost even more to shutdown
That shutdown is considered the AM talk radio gold standard, a huge victory for Newt and conservatives as told in later renditions.
But who will cook the lobster at the WH?.
“Washington should keep nonessential services shut down
FOREVER!!”
One of my relatives lives alone. She had been in the habit of running a household, but her family has all grown and gone for some time. She recently had her main water drain get clogged. While she was waiting for estimates and repairs, she started doing dishes and small clothing in the bathtub, dumping gray water in the garden and making one trip a month to the laundromat for large stuff. She liked it so much, she kept on after the repairs and wondered why she hadn’t started doing this years ago. Her bills went down.
Just a small illustration of a larger problem. Government keeps getting bigger, but never gets smaller even when needs go down, such as the Department of Education or the Equal Employment Opportunity empire, or when costs go up, such as our enormous debt. But real savings can be had if government returns to its original purposes instead of being a cash cow for power-seeking, greedy elitists.
Does this mean EBTs are shut off?
Every military school (West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy) is effected and with Midshipmen basically having study hall until this is over. I thought you guys supported the military. I guess just when convenient.
Now let’s do some trimming.
But the F.D.A. will be unable to support the majority of its food safety activities such as routine establishment inspections, some compliance and enforcement activities, monitoring of imports, notification programs (eg. food contact substances, infant formula), and the majority of the laboratory research necessary to inform public health decision-making.Bon appetit....
Unfortunately no. The parasites will continue to suck the lifeblood out of their productive fellow citizens.
cry me a river. the military's budget in 2002 was $436 billion. In 2012 it was $677 billion. For those of you who don't want to do the math that's a 55% increase. NOTE this does NOT include veterans benefits.
NEW FLASH The military isn't a sacred cow
Oh and the budget figures are for 1.4 million active duty personnel in 2002 and 1.4 million active duty personnel in 2012
You hit on a good point recently made by Thomas Sowell on the subject of shutting down services deemed to be non-essential:
Imagine a department that is tasked with exactly two objectives. One is to build statues to Benedict Arnold around the country. The other is to provide free school lunches to kids in poverty. Now suppose the department is ordered to trim 5% from its budget. From which half does it make the cut? Answer: 100% of the cuts will come from the free lunches. Cutting from that program will create a hue and cry to restore full funding, while a cut from the statue half will only lead people to wonder why we were paying for all the statues of Benedict Arnold in the first place.
Let’s apply that to the current situation. If they actually stopped the work of truly non-essential projects, people will very quickly wonder why we’re funding non-essential services.
Who are these "you guys" of which you speak?
Just took my mom to the commissary, OPEN for business, only thing
affected is someone not available to update their website! This entire
government shutdown is a HUGE joke!! I think everyone is going to find
out just how many unessential government workers they are actually
paying for!!!!
affected.
What the hell do editors do these days?
