It's a classic example of the MSM's use of sympathetic individual anecdotes to manipulate public opinion in favor of more and bigger government. Today's Good Morning America segment on the looming government shutdown, narrated by former New York Times reporter Jeff Zeleny, offered the stories of just two people, both African-Americans, who could be hurt by a government shutdown. And check out the screen graphic: not to dramatize things or nuthin', but ABC plaintively wonders how federal workers would "survive."
ABC could have balanced its report with stories of younger people who will see their health insurance premiums double or more if ObamaCare is implemented. But why would Good Morning America want to go there?

I lived in the WDC area for 30 years. Every time there was a “shutdown”, the government “workers” eventually got retroactive pay. So, essentially, they had a paid vacation. Most fed government employees could be laid off forever and no one would notice. They are overpaid and over-benefited. However, they constantly whine. Just watch, one will follow this post by slamming my comment and start whining incessantly.
“Gov workers always get back pay. ABC is full of it.”
Sadly, that’s true! It would be nice if they actually lost the pay they will get for “not working.” Probably a bigger chunk of the deficit than the sequester.
Anyone who took a job working for an organization that has amassed the largest debt load in world history, deserves what they get.
