House GOP votes to delay healthcare law for one year

The House of Representatives early on Sunday brought the federal government closer to a shutdown as it voted to delay President Barack Obama's landmark healthcare law for a year as part of an emergency spending bill.

By a mostly partisan vote of 231-192, the Republican-controlled House approved the "Obamacare" amendment, despite a veto threat from the White House.

It also voted 248-174 to repeal a medical device tax that aims to help fund healthcare programs under the 2010 law.

And in a sign that lawmakers might be resigned to a government shutdown beginning Tuesday, the House unanimously approved a bill to keep paying U.S. soldiers in the event the government runs out of money to run many programs.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid reiterated on Saturday that the House bill would be dead on arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate, which is not scheduled to meet until 2 p.m. on Monday.

Obama also threatened to veto any bill that delays his healthcare restructuring.

There is a slight chance the two sides could reach a funding deal before the government's fiscal year ends at midnight on Monday. Congress could also act at any time to end the impasse if a shutdown did occur.

But the bitterness of the House debate on Saturday night that spilled into early Sunday did not bode well for prospects of a compromise.

A vote that only includes the congressional exemption would be a complete cave. Duhhhh.....these folks ain’t poor. They’d just pay the “tax” for not getting Obamacare and have private insurance options.

Keep reminding people the democrats death care bill is 100% democrat - and only democrat. The Republicans tried to stop it from the very beginning.

Tell them to be careful who they vote for next time. Elections have consequences. If they don't vote - suggest they start!

That’s a surprisingly positive article. I will be interested to see what the American press has to say.

The House of Representatives early on Sunday brought the federal government closer to a shutdown as it voted to delay...

What about the House passing a CR to fund the government?

What about the Senate not passing that?

What about The Senate last Friday brought the federal government closer to a shutdown as it voted NO on a CR that fully funded the government but omitted 0bamacare?

And they seriously wonder why fewer and fewer people read them, buy them, and take them seriously.

Bias? What bias?

And there's no doubt in my mind that all the sane Americans would agree with this.

Let’s start talking about “Obama-Ripoff” rather than “Obama-Care”.

The kids might as well hear the truth in words they understand.

nother nugget...

Failure to raise the debt ceiling by mid-October could result in the government defaulting on its obligations.

False.

Not borrowing MORE is not defaulting on current. This will be easy to splain to the people.

"0bama and the dems want to make you pay more taxes. The republicans are saying "no" to that. That's all. 0bama and the dems are lying to you - just as Joe Wilson famously yelled. We pay our existing debts - we just don't allow them to borrow any MORE that will be taken from you in taxes."

did I say the only vote???

No you didn't. I had thought that this round of amendments was over, and that if goes to the HOR the third time, the congressional exemption would be the "includes congresss" ploy. Added to the bill, it's great. Instead of the delay or defund and the medical tax, it's really just a smokescreen that would allow pols to completely avoid Obamacare while looking good for the voters.

The suggestion to call it the “Obama Rip-off” is a good one. The younger generation will know at least someone was telling them the truth when they wind up paying the Roberts’ Tax for this boondoggle.
