Having tried and failed to sell restive conservatives on plans to keep the government open without picking a fight over Obamacare, it appears that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is moving on to Plan C: Giving in to people like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) who are insisting that any bill to keep the government open after Sept. 30 must defund Obamacare.
National Review's Robert Costa tweets:
House GOP sources confirm: House GOP WILL soon bring a CR to floor that also defunds, thus putting pressure on Cruz & co to get thru Senate Robert Costa (@robertcostaNRO) September 17, 2013
House GOP ldrs basically saying, "Ok, Ted and conservative activists, if you think you can rally public behind this, get it thru Senate..." Robert Costa (@robertcostaNRO) September 17, 2013
"... and if you can't, you're going to have to let us use another option. But we'll play along and try this--for now." Robert Costa (@robertcostaNRO) September 17, 2013
I guess the idea is that House Republicans will open with a demand of defunding Obamacare and see if Senate Democrats agree to go along. (Spoiler alert: They won't.) The question is how long Republicans have to leave this demand out there until they've officially determined the strategy isn't going to work.

Na they would never vote for someone like me. It’s hard to run against “Santa Clas”.
RE: I think Lonegan could be one if we can get him elected
NJ is a lost cause.
Oh, yes, he has. Cruz has forced McConnel to push for defunding in the senate, or else lose his j-o-b.
Agreed. The urgent and accurate message isn’t getting past the cutting room floor of the DC Media Complex.
Change the TAX code!
The reason American companies moved abroad is largely due to issues with the Governments (Federal and some State), union thuggery, and as a by-product of progressive movements and policies.
No way in hell would I move back, or expand business in the U.S. right now. Want the problem fixed, kick the lawmakers in the @ss.
Listened to Krauthammer last night. Of course he said this won’t work.
Given that, he is saying that the 0bamacare will collapse under its own weight and complexity, not to mention all the exemptions, carveouts and conflicting provisions within the law itself. I would hope that the former would work..but the fact is, we do NOT have a majority in the Senate..and any number of weak-kneed GOPe’s. We won’t get another chance until 11/14. By then, even 0bamavoters should be feeling the pain they voted for.
It is going to be messy and painful either way. And watch the stockmarket on October 1st and after the new year. If defunding doesn’t work, watch those insurance company stocks jump. Damn them.
The Republicans should fund the government in its entirety except for Obamacare. It is clear that the Republicans do not want a government shutdown.
Many Democrats realize that Obamacare is very bad for their constituents. Democrats will be taking action to shutdown the government in spite of what their constituents want.
This country does not want Obamacare, a package irresponsibly passed without reading what was in its thousands of pages.
The country will be better off without Obamacare, and may be even better off with a shutdown engineered by the Democrats. The vile virus called Obamacare must be stopped now before more economic damage is done to our country.
NUTS!
Defund Obamacare and have the courage to get on the national stage (WITH A UNIFIED VOICE), and announce that you have passed a budget that defunds Obamacare and if the Senate and the President choose NOT to sign it, then IT IS THEY WHO ARE SHUTTING DOWN THE GOVT!!
RE: WITH A UNIFIED VOICE
You hit the problem with Republicans right there.
Well, then maybe the Dems will vote to defund. This is a very unpopular program, and I think the longer it gets dragged out, the more opposition there will be, especially as its effects become known (I’m thinking of Walgreens, for example, which dropped their health care benefits today).
bump
Obamacare must die.
How can Sen. Cruz influence the House anyway?
If Sen. Cruz has this much power (as the article suggest), then I'll cast my vote for him now for president.
Maybe we will get lucky and save this country.
5.56mm
The 49%'ers beg to disagree...they NEED their almighty gummit to keep reloading those EBT cards!!
Ted Cruz is a conservative intellectual giant who was a national champion debater in college and law school, clerked for SCOTUS CJ Rhenquist, was very successful at the USSC as AG of Texas, described by Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz as the smartest student he very taught.
If he runs for President, he will win because no one can compete against him and win.
We'd all like to see that happen, but what's your solution to making it a reality?
Who doesn’t want one?
SHUT IT DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And keep it shut down
Agreed.
