Did Ted Cruz Just Force Republicans Into A Government Shutdown They Don't Want?
Business Insider ^ | 09/18/2013 | Josh Barro

Having tried and failed to sell restive conservatives on plans to keep the government open without picking a fight over Obamacare, it appears that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is moving on to Plan C: Giving in to people like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) who are insisting that any bill to keep the government open after Sept. 30 must defund Obamacare.

National Review's Robert Costa tweets:

House GOP sources confirm: House GOP WILL soon bring a CR to floor that also defunds, thus putting pressure on Cruz & co to get thru Senate — Robert Costa (@robertcostaNRO) September 17, 2013

House GOP ldrs basically saying, "Ok, Ted and conservative activists, if you think you can rally public behind this, get it thru Senate..." — Robert Costa (@robertcostaNRO) September 17, 2013

"... and if you can't, you're going to have to let us use another option. But we'll play along and try this--for now." — Robert Costa (@robertcostaNRO) September 17, 2013

I guess the idea is that House Republicans will open with a demand of defunding Obamacare and see if Senate Democrats agree to go along. (Spoiler alert: They won't.) The question is how long Republicans have to leave this demand out there until they've officially determined the strategy isn't going to work.

It was awful for republicans in that they were blamed and maligned by dems and their press. It was not awful in that Gingrich and his people didnt care that they were despised by their political enemies.
And that’s it

Govt shutdown sounds bad to some people. But it’s like nothing. Reagan was right. thats why its funny. It’s unnoticeable

Mr. 101:

It is certainly good to fight to win.

But if Cruz loses this fight gloriously and is returned to the Senate, then even if the battle were lost, we could hope the war was going our way.

You could eliminate all taxes and regulations and that wouldn’t stem the tide of offshoring for slave wages. The regulation/tax is a fig leaf for corporate exploitation of 3rd world labor. So now I have to pay for the unemployed in the US....

Subtle pressure. Not so much from Cruz or Lee, they guided US to pressure the wimps, unsubtly (their ass is grass and we are the lawnmower).

Cruz is right and many likely voters know he’s right.

The House cutting out nobamacare in their CR doesn’t need Senate OK. If either the Senate dems or nobama refuse to go along with the CR from the House, they are the ones closing down gubmit.

The RINOs still don't get it. Most people I know would rather have the government shut down than to cede control of their bodies to the feds.

I just got a taste of how spooky things are getting. I just renewed my driver's license in OH (hoo-rah...the eye machines do not like me), Anyway, the questions. Drink or use drugs? Any citations? Organ donor? Registered to vote? Living will? Blackouts, seizures, mental health problems? etc etc plus "friendly conversation" about my lifestyle. Used to be you took your eyetest, paid, got your picture taken and that's it.

Cruz, Paul, and Lee are just about the toughest, smartest, and most principled guys in the Senate. We need more like them.

(I think Lonegan could be one if we can get him elected.)

That’s what I’m wondering. Are the thinkers in the conservative movement keeping Mike Lee out of the major limelight for awhile, while the RINOS focus on Cruz? Are there others beginning to coalesce with them?

The mistake Republicans are making about the shutdown is their not telling the American public that Obama is the one engineering it.

I hope Ted Cruz has become the conscience and trailblazer for confused Republicans.

Obamacare is a big part of the reason USA is losing so many jobs now.

Why does anyone presume we NEED the Federal Government?

They do virtually nothing of good use.

Shut ‘em down, and let the bureaucrats watch MTV for a month or two.

Nobody will notice.

The only way to force a spoiled brat to behave is to punish, punish, punish.

The worst punishment that a Democrat, or RINO can imagine is to take away their ability to spend our tax dollars.

The best way to do that is to shutdown the non-essental parts of the US Federal Government, starting with mothballing Air Force One.

Cruz, Lee and Paul are leaders. McConnell, Cantor and Boehner are kabuki dancers for the establishment who pretend to be leaders.

What a difference a tiny handful of real leaders with backbone make . . .

Failing to see how Ted Cruz has forced anything on anyone....

Absolutely. Last I checked Cruz is a Senator.

"Until the House determines its strategy for keeping the government funded, the Senate will continue work on legislation dealing with energy efficiency and may consider a bill addressing the high-tech industry."
