It is very possible that the president will not obtain a join authorization to bomb Syria; if he chooses to go ahead and attack anyway, Obama will incite a constitutional crisisthe first time in history that a president has decided to go to war against the declared wishes of Congress. The public and the courts will adjudicate the legality of that act, and it would be contentious.
So the corner that Obama has painted himself into is now inescapable. Defying Congress will put the country into a Watergate/Monicagate mess. Not doing anything will confirm the administrations impotence and only enhance Russia, Iran, Assad, China, Islamists, and almost anyone else who does not like the U.S. Doing something small, with or without congressional approval, will be looked upon as a cynical waste of human lives to restore Obamas credibility, the sort of craven, immoral political act that a younger Obama made a career out of mocking. Doing something big will invite public and global outrage if only moderately successful, and doom the Obama presidency if unsuccessful.
How did Obama get himself into this mess? It was bound to happen, given his past habits. All we are seeing now is the melodramatic fulfillment of vero possumus, lowering the rising seas, faux Corinthian columns, hope and change, the bows, the Cairo speech, and the audacity of hope. Hubris does earn Nemesis.
1) His inclination is to damn straw men, blame others for his self-inflicted errors, and spike the ball when he should keep quiet and become modest (cf. the bin Laden raid). So in Syria we heard the same old, same old: A host of bad guys, here and abroad, wants to do nothing.

He’s only in this mess because the entire world is racist.
From the comments:
Blacksaint-We needed a bigger-than-life President we got a Dope smoking, Coke snorting, Radical Left wing Chicago thug that has spend his life surrounded and tutored by American hater,s, terrorist and Marxist!
We needed a well-grounded stable President we got a certifiable narcissist.
We needed bold leadership we got a teleprompter
We needed a seasoned hand we got a hand in in our pockets
We needed a champion for American citizens... and respect for for the Makers instead we got a champion for the Takers and uneducated horde of invading Illegal Aliens
We needed a skilled bridge builder we got a class-warfare specialist and inciter-in-chief.
We needed practical, proven policies we got socialist dogma and monumental waste
First class leaders want firstclass help; Second class leaders want third class help.
if he goes through with it, he will damage the presidency almost beyond repair.
For years and years, the democrats did whatever they could to damage the the government and people’s view of the presidency. They did all this just to gain a few seats so they could impose their world view on the other 80% of the country. They made it their business, wrote books, attended movies and even entertained conspiracy theories to undermine the office.
I’m not sure the media can undo this debacle. What this charade proves is that a plurality of the people (43%) might “like” Obama or think “he’s cool” but nobody trusts him or his government. They spend my entire adult lifetime and untold millions of dollars telling anyone that would listen that you can’t trust “the man” and now those chickens are coming home to roost.
I’m frustrated with the title of this article, and I hope VDH didn’t write it. It should be “If it WEREN’T Syria...” Geeesh! Don’t they teach English anymore?
Otherwise, I agree with the good professor’s premise.
VDH is da man.
This is a proper skewering.
Deployment? I thought you said unemployment.
********
LOL! Good post.
Imagine the humiliation BO would experience (if that's possible) if for the first time in history an "outraged global community" demands the forfeiture of his cherished Nobel "Peace" Prize ?
just saying ...
Yeah, I guess my fear is, does he come home and beat the wife, and kick the dog because he can’t stand up for himself at work? Time will tell, but Putin is definitely up to something.
The Nobel ‘Peace’ prizes are for the greater part just a sham now anyway. It was so telling that the committee bestowed one of their prizes on a fraud who had zero actual accomplishments in life, other than two autobiographies fabricating a persona, written by someone else, in both cases!
I think omoslem may use the congress as an excuse to crawl back from the precipice.
Omoslem moved his bishop to attack a rook and Putin moved his pieces in place to not only threaten the loss of the bishop but way more besides. Omoslem needs to move the bishop back and I think that the congress will provide the cover for doing just that.

He looks really bad. He takes ages to answer the questions and does not really answer them. He looks small, weak, perhaps even sickly. It is truly painful to watch and I do not like this guy. I have no idea how the MSM dealt with this, I do not have television.
The Saudis have put a lot of money into this country, and now they want a favor in return.
I absolutely love this paragraph!!!
Victor writes “ Obama cannot attract top talent. Those from prior administrations who are gifted and worked for him or who were promoted by himRobert Gates, David Petraeus, Paul Volcker, Richard Holbrooke, James Mattis, Stanley McChrystaleither were treated badly, not fully utilized, or ended up regretting their experience. Instead a host of mediocrities are recruited on the basis of either their partisanship, loyalty or demonstrated past lightnessan Eric Holder, Joe Biden, Susan Rice, Timothy Geithner, Chuck Hagel, etc. “
OUCH!!!
"Ahh, but the Red Line that's... that's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and with... geometric logic... that a duplicate Red Line drawn by the rest of the world DID exist, and I'd have produced that Red Line if they hadn't of pulled the Syria resolution out of action. I, I, I know now they were only trying to protect some fellow congressmen...
He comes off as a dullard in that.
A dullard? Yes. The question is, is he unravelling?
I heard it was a bad presser .... in fact, that he was embarrassing. No TOTUS was part of the problem - he’s TOTally dependent on it. My personal opinion is that there is drug use and his handlers (VJ in particular) make sure he’s functional by giving him certain drugs at at the right time. First debate with Romney was a miscalculation. Tin foil hat stuff, but the more I ‘see’, the more I believe it.
I’d like to see Putin change his middle name, from Vladimirovich to “Nemesis.”
