"that the United States adopt a guaranteed annual income, with no mandatory work requirements, for all citizens in need."

Who say this coming? This will be the real Obamacare.

There are no guarantees in life. If everyone DESERVES money without effort, then EVERY SINGLE PERSON deserves to live. Not just those who are not aborted by their mothers.

It sounds lovely but it is doomed to be a Cuba, a North Korea or an East Germany.

You can’t reason with anyone with the intellectual capacity of a two-year old.

he wrote in his 1967 book

Which most likely includes examples of plagiarism like his doctoral dissertation.

I have a dream — that one day my people will not have to do a damn thing! I have a dream! That the glorious work done by others will be guaranteed to be distributed to my people! I have been to the mountaintop! I have been to Cuba! I have seen the promised land!

They have MLK endorsing everything now, from illegal immigration to a minimum wage.

Apparently King was for every single item on today's cracked progressive agenda.

What these morons don’t get is that a basic income guarantee only guarantees everything will cost that much more. They all need to make a trip to Norway, then some of them would get it. Even then, many of them would STILL extoll the virtues of such ideas. Some folks ya just can’t reach...

The liberal talking points are out.

I have seen three articles like this in the past three days, and they all say Milton Friedman was in favor of this.

They reside in a liberal echo chamber.

The problem with the guaranteed income is that you’d immediately create a million out of work welfare workers, who’d be more of a menace to America than any army of tweakers could ever be.

They will fix everything scam goes on. Income is for slaves bound to never open a business. Minimum wage is meant to assure a tax return to government and official employment competing with “black market”. Good luck with that. Inflation of the false currency will warrant its replacement.

Welcome to communist hell America.

That is pure unadulterated communist gobbledegook! Why not give everyone in the US $100,000 per year? Hell, make everyone a millionaire! The war on poverty is lost because (1) government largess provides little incentive to work and (2) the government continually redefines the poverty level upwards. Compare poor people in the fifties with today’s poor. Many of today’s poor have air conditioning, flat screen TVs, subsidized rent, food, and electricity, and an automobile, and certainly, a cell phone. Ridiculous! A civil war is coming, but this time between the Makers and the Takers.

That is just what the underclass yearns for: free money, free medical care, free child care, and all with no work required for the recipients.

Thanks for an article which offers some levelheaded truth about MLK. No one should view that man as a hero.

The preacher of non-violence said it was his intent to go into towns and create crisis-packed situations. He voiced support for reparations.

In his April 1967 speech at the Riverside Church, he claimed our troops in Vietnam committed atrocities, and spoke of “Western arrogance.” He said that North Vietnam had legitimate reasons to be suspicious of the U.S. And he called the American government the “greatest purveyor of violence in the world.”

Now tell me why any conservative would lionize that.

"I am now convinced that the simplest solution to poverty is to abolish it directly by a new widely discussed measure: the guaranteed income,"

Dr. King's statement shows a significant gap in both his understanding of basic economics and basic human nature, sorry to say.

In 1969, a Presidential Commission recommended, 22-0, that the United States adopt a guaranteed annual income, with no mandatory work requirements, for all citizens in need. The report was buried and forgotten.

Forgotten because it is an idiotic idea. Oh, wait, that's right. How about welfare with no work requirement? Same thing. If you give people a free handout, there are those who will be quite satisfied to take it and never lift a finger to work to try to make something better of themselves other than being a freeloading leech on society. Oh, they'll lift their fingers to use their obamaphones though to complain they're not getting enough of a handout....

he wrote in his 1967 book, "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?" "A host of psychological changes inevitably will result from widespread economic security."

I seriously doubt Dr. King thought these "psychological changes" would result in dependence, blight, illiteracy, out of control non married birth, crime, gangster rap, black genocide by abortion...I could go on and on and on...

Minimum wage, living wage, guaranteed income, right to health care, kids shouldn’t have to pay for college. Enough.

Abolish all income. Ban money. Everybody gets anything he wants by just calling a government telephone number. No more working, no more studying, no more tax forms, no more IRS. Just one telephone number.

Isn’t this where we’re heading, anyway? Everything’s free, nobody pays for anything. Ignore the details.
