Russian President Vladimir Putin, the career KGB officer who has presided over the rollback of his countrys post-Communist freedoms and revived Cold War-style anti-Americanism, is an unlikely hero for American conservatives. Yet the Kremlin strongman has lately found some fans on the right who see him as a defender of Christian values most recently, in the imbroglio over Russias new legal ban on gay propaganda. It is a sad misjudgment that does a disservice to the causes of conservatism, freedom, and religion alike.
Spokesmen for several right-wing groups including the American Family Association have praised the Russian law, which prohibits any pro-gay speech or expression that could be accessible to minors. Veteran columnist Pat Buchanan has joined the Putin cheerleading squad. And, shockingly, the usually thoughtful author Rod Dreher, who blogs for The American Conservative, has added his own 1.5 Cheers for Putin.
While condemning anti-gay violence and authoritarianism in Russia, Dreher praises Putins willingness to speak up for Christianity and laments that post-Soviet Russia, for all its grievous flaws, is . . . more conscious of its Christian history and character than the United States.
This is a truly grievous misunderstanding of the reality of religion and politics in 21st Century Russia. Russia today is outwardly far more religious than most of Western Europe, but its a religion of state more than church: Orthodox Christianity has taken Communisms place as the new official ideology, with church membership an official badge of patriotism and loyalty.

“After all, he is the nation’s first BLACK President.’
And just wait until he is followed by “the nation’s first WOMAN President”.
People still don’t get it — what matters is NOT the color or gender, but what they stand for. Would Obama had been elected if he were white?
I could go on all night...
Christian President Putin bans homosexual demonstrations, or any type of demonstrations at Winter Olympics. Sodomites that don’t like it, keep your ass out of Russia.
Yep - Methinks Cathy doesn't understand the concept of "real man" and how it is the natural and desirable state for adult males - both from female and male perspectives. She thinks being limp-wristed, having feces-coated genitalia, and amorality are attributes of manhood.
What those on this thread have been extolling is Putin's actions that have been strengthening the forces of Faith & moral tradition, and removing some of the Marxist era assaults on Faith & moral values. No one has suggested that he is trying to Americanize Russia; nor that we should Russianize America.
But certainly American Conservatives can applaud his reintroduction of traditional religious values in the Russian schools; his support for traditional family values as against some of the aberrant nonsense being promoted in America--such as the oxymoron "same sex marriage"; and certainly he has not embraced the attack on the very concept of the nation, which appeals to pseudo-intellectual poseurs in American & European academia.

Granted, it the comments are rhetorical, they’re just stupid.
It's all part of the plan ...
Everybody’s stupid but we who come here to tell you that you’re stupid for praising Putin.
You state, "Bingo. I have always said that neocon doctrine of judging every society under same measures is a failure." Actually it is an absurd misconception growing out of their origins--according to their own "Godfather," in admiration for Leon Trotsky, the chief butcher in the Bolshevik takeover of Russia. (See The Neocon Phenomenon, where we look at the phenomenon by analyzing their own words, in depth. The Trotsky influenced manifestation are truly ex-communists, with delusions of grandeur.)
Ultimately, the ideology, you refute, boils down to a fundamental attack on the very concept of the nation; which has always been based upon the uniqueness, the exceptionalism of every people. Not only the Marxists, but the Ivy League seekers of World Government, of course, as well as various other fantasy seekers, seek to undermine the concept.

I said the comments are stupid, not the people making them. You’re just too stupid to notice the difference.
If you don’t think that Putin as a leader is copacetic, then who? Francois Mitterand? Silvio Berlusconi? No, then you’re are voting for Barry Soetero, admit it! You are saying, as many expressly do, that while Soetero is not perfect, then at least he was democratically elected in the Greatest Nation Ever On Planet Earth. Pfffft!
Was it Castro, or Guevara, who merely jailed homos versus executing them, and for whom would FReepers trade? /s
Probably not. Expect more of this crap. Run a communist who is -————— (fill in the “protected class” of your choice

It’s picture perfect. Perfectly tells ‘the picture’.
