Is a cartoon-like college mascot reminiscent of Daniel Boone -- right down to the legendary coonskin cap -- racist, sexist or otherwise offensive?

Officials at the University of Denver seem to think so. They

FTA:

The image of Denver Boone was originally designed by a Walt Disney artist and named by a UD student back in 1968 .

The cartoony figure, which sports a scruffy beard and a raccoon skin cap, is reminiscent of the Daniel Boone character from the 1950s TV show based on the real-life pioneer.

. . .

“Mythology and Fess Parker aside, it is well documented that Daniel Boone never wore a coonskin cap.

This author needs an editor who knows a little popular history. Fess Parker did not play Daniel Boone and the Disney series was not about Daniel Boone; it was about Davy Crockett, who was from TN.

In the settling of the American West, The guys wearing animal fur hats are what made it possible for the women to follow along later.

This is PC douchebaggery.

I think the correct acronym is LGBTBTTFKRSNRGMNCHRS. Its hard to keep up since it changes daily.

I think it was more his role in the Indian wars that did him in as a symbol, rather than any coon references

How was Boone polarizing? He explored the Cumberland Pass that opened up Kentucky, and eventually the west.

The coonskin hat was an invention of Disney when they selected Fess Parker to play the role on TV. Disney essentially converted Boone into Davey Crockett so that Parker could continue to play the character, if not the name, that he was so popular for.

And this from a private university that was originally established by religious people to educate others.

Sorry this one really angers me. Glad my mom and dad have already passed otherwise I would be planning two funerals. Expect two earthquakes in the Denver area any second now

Denver Boone: Bad

Washington Redskins: A-OK!

I suggest Frito Bandito would be more fitting for Denver these days.

According to history. Daniel Boone never wore a coon skin cap; he preferred a standard broad brimmed hat and would have looked like a forerunner to the cowboy. The coon skin cap was Davy Crockett’s trademark. But why expect liberals to know American history. On that note, Davy Crockett was a Democrat.

I would recommend that University of Denver adopt as their mascot a rainbow-colored bunny.

Oh, no it's a *gasp* raCOON. I'm surprised none of the PC "not sees" from nearby Vassar, Marist or SUNY New Paltz b*tched and complained....yet.

When I attended SUNY Stony Brook in the late 80s, I played on the Stony Brook Patriots Lax team. The women's basketball team was known as "The Lady Patriots." The "mascot" was a Minute Man, complete with his Kentucky rifle.

Sometime since then, the team names have been changed to the "Sea Wolves."

Just damn, at least I still have my Patriots Lacrosse T-shirt from back then!

I think it was because of the little ditty adapted from the Daniel Boone theme song I heard as a child.
