Sen. Rand Paul is hammering his fellow senators for keeping billions in financial aid flowing to Egypt's military -- even as Cairo's security forces massacre anti-government activists.
"This is something that those who voted in Congress are going to have to live with," Paul told The Cable on Thursday. "The question is: How does their conscience feel now as they see photographs of tanks rolling over Egyptian civilians?"
As the official Egyptian death toll climbs to 638, the legislation the Kentucky libertarian is referring to was an amendment to suspend aid to Egypt until the country holds free and fair elections. Two weeks ago, Republicans and Democrats rejected it by an overwhelming 86-13 vote -- and top lawmakers in both parties protested it loudly.
"This amendment may be good politics, but it is bad policy," Sen. Bob Menendez, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said at the time.
"It would be a terrific mistake for the United States to send a message to Egypt: you're on your own," Republican Senator John McCain added back then. "I urge my colleagues to vote to table the Paul amendment."
The vote has already come back to haunt some lawmakers, such as McCain, who is now advocating a cancellation of aid to Egypt . . .

If that's the case, then the US shouldn't have elected Obama.
We should stop funding them.
Because they’re taking a stand against Islamic terrorists who burn churches whenever they get a chance?
The Muslim Brotherhood is the grandfather of all of the terrorist movements in the mid east.
The Egyptian government is doing the right thing in shooting every single one of them.
However, where Paul is coming from: The Paul family are against any kind of foreign aid. Period.
And Paul may be right.
However, he is giving the impression that he thinks that the Muslim Brotherhood is/are innocent protesters being killed by a bad bad Egyptian army.
Not so.
I am perfectly fine with MB getting iced by the Egyptian Army
It is no wonder the world hates us.
I hope obama’s golf game is going well.
They sure goofed up when they thought they could pick out good wicked people.
I totally agree with what you have posted. And I am starting to see the point in no Foreign Aid.
Bump!
I bet the Egyptions are pissed the Muslims take credit for the varying forms of mathematics that preceded the birth of Christ.
This Egyptian debacle is giving traction to Rand Paul’s neoisolationist positions. Hard pressed Americans are beginning to wonder if the foreign entanglements are worth the material and human sacrifices. This of course sets the stage for a battle for the sol of the Republican party with the neoconservatives. It will be interesting.
I agree, but I think the whole of Egypt will destabilize despite the Army’s best efforts. Hope not, but the signs are not good.
Rand is a fool.
He knows nothing of what’s going on in Egypt. He’s as stupid as his stupid crazy father. He’s taking the WRONG FREAKING SIDE! His reason for not giving money to Egypt is because he thinks the miltiary is bad and the MB are the good guys.
Makes me want to puke.
Anyway, Putin’s helping Egypt now and el-Sisi won’t take 0bastard’s call, so US influence is over, anyway. The Egyptians know full well that 0bastard’s been supporting the Mozlem Brotherhood and the MB has a very narrow small support in Egypt.
Good quote from Sultan Knish, saw a link to this article on a thread I’m trying to find, it should be posted on FR, great article:

The GOP may be able to reconcile itself to a Rand Paul, sacrificing its national security plank to keep its socially liberal values and free trade core intact, but not to a Ted Cruz who represents something far closer to its populist base. Give the Elephant Party someone it can agree with on illegal alien amnesty, sending jobs to China and shrugging at all the Bible Belt stuff... while winning back the approval of the Tea Party and it can work with that.
Billions of dollars in aid to Egypt has been a questionable practice we’ve indulged in ever since Jimmy Carter, if not before.
It would be good if we could cut back on that aid—and on most other foreign aid.
But we sure as hell shouldn’t do it at this particular moment, because the Generals have followed the wishes of most Egyptians and thrown the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood out of office. Or because the generals are shooting terrorists who are busy raping and murdering and burning innocent people, including Coptic Christians.
If anything, we should be supporting the Generals at this point. But of course the Left Wing Press, the Left Wing White House, and the Left Wingers in Europe are all in favor of supporting Muslim terrorists.
The hell with that.
Hmmm. Aren’t these guys clearing out the Muslim Brotherhood? We should probably increase the aid if it is going for pest control..

It looks as though the mil, with the support of the Egyptian people, is cleaning house.
The muslim brotherhood will come out of this even stronger.
Mubarak was smart enough to refrain from random killing of a major portion of the population. They are the largest single faction of the country and nothing will happen without them. Many of the brotherhood types have family who have been on the government side but that will change pretty fast as their brotherhood family members are killed.
The interim VP has already stepped down and he was Obama’s choice immediately following the fall of Mubarak. Elbaradei is the man to watch. He’s the “moderate” muslim face of the brotherhood who also happens to be a globalist. Unfortunately he’s already threatened war with Israel.
I wouldn’t count on them being cleaned out.
Umm, the Egyptian military are trying to stop RADICAL MUSLIM TERRORISTS who want to kill Christians. Jeez, Rand. Why don’t you spend more time condemning the terrorists who are tearing Egypt apart.
