2 children dead after python escapes N.B. pet store

Two children died after a python got into an apartment in Campbellton, N.B., RCMP say.

"Police are investigating two sudden deaths of two young boys," Const. Julie Rogers-Marsh said Monday.

It's believed the snake escaped from a pet store called Reptile Ocean. The victims were boys aged five and seven. They were visiting a friend in the apartment above the store, police said in a statement released Monday.

Initial information indicates the snake got into the ventilation system and then into the apartment upstairs.

"It's believed the two boys were strangled by the snake," she said, noting that autopsies are scheduled for tomorrow in Saint John.

I’ve read multiple reports saying the rock python is 4 meters +, and some saying everything from 13 to 16 feet.

I read one article that said snakes over 8 ft aren’t legal for sale (was that you?), but that this snake was his pet and not for sale.

That doesn’t preclude his having other pythons that are also pets in addition to the killer python.

Do they will bite but won’t “wrap” ?

I know people who see a newly hatched corn snake in the yard and say it was 3 feet long.

Wait for an official report on the length.

Hysterics usually causes magna-vision.

From what I gather, yes, it was ‘over the limit’.

Calling it “killer python” certainly makes me think the MSM has already done it’s job...just like “the murderer, Zimmerman”.

:-\

Unless killing for food, they don’t really “wrap” in defense.

It makes no sense when their aim is to cause whatever’s scaring them to let go so they can flee.

Holding something you’re afraid of closer to you is illogical and unnatural.

Nobody on-scene mentioned any bite marks at all, yet.

If there’s no bite marks, this case is just getting started.

They must bite to wrap.

I’m so glad to read that you found him! I remember that he was lost for a long time and then I lost track of the thread. Yea!

I was waiting for your opinion on this story as even I thought it sounded pretty spectacular and unusual. I, too, am thinking the two legged kind of animal may have had a hand in this...

Interesting. It definitely sounds very suspicious.

Yeah I found the little nitwit.

He’s been in serious lockdown ever since.

Still fancies himself running free so his house is extra secure.

If I thought the snake was responsible, I’d be first in line to condemn it.

However, this is so far beyond the capabilities of 99.9% of extant snakes I have to call BS.

If you wanted to pull off the perfect crime, using something viscerally horrifying and nearly universally despised would be a great cover.

Last year people in Florida tried this same scenario and were caught.

The Canucks have supposedly called in the big forensics dogs as the story, as stands, is being seriously doubted by most involved.

Who/whatever killed them, I hope is found out.

My heart goes out to the people who loved the boys.

This is an unimaginable pain.

Very odd interview with the owner. Says the snake was nowhere near them when he discovered the boys in the morning, that he thought they were asleep? Asleep with a ceiling that fell in on them? Says he never heard a thing - again, didn’t hear a ceiling falling? Then he says that he found the snake and put it in a cage...the vicious snake no one ever handled : |

Definitely strange. If he is the fella charged in 2011, the authorities should know this, and hopefully will investigate this case very carefully.

May God rest their souls, and bring some comfort to their parents.

A ceiling falling with a snake that may have weighed 100lbs?!

And no one heard anything...

:/

Last but not least, it is now officially under criminal investigation, with the boys being autopsied soon.

All of this is beyond bizarre.

I do notice that the headlines still say ‘snake kills boys’ or a variant, thereof.

Some sites have “terrifying images” of Ball Pythons posted.

You have that right. And over on another thread, the RCMP are reporting a version that is just a little different than the version the owner gave in an interview with the BBC : /

Also, xzins, did the RCMP say specifically that the boys were in a bedroom? Because if so, it differs from the owner’s interview again : /

Scroll down Sal, and it just keeps gettin’ weirder.

I remember the spokesman saying the snake was found in the room. I assumed it to be the room with the boys.

Here's a quote from this article in which it also reports the snake has been put down: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/story/2013/08/06/nb-snake-boys-campbellton-mayor.html

The snake eventually came through the ceiling and down into the living room, where the brothers were sleeping. Tremblay declined to provide many details about the ongoing investigation, but he did say the snake was found in the same room where the boys were found.

The police made it sound like the cage went all the way to the ceiling and that the ventilation duct was in that same ceiling at the top of the cage.

Now it sounds like the snake was in the apartment and not the store. So, it goes into ceiling duct which is already the 2nd floor, and then into that duct to drop through ceiling onto boys.

Were the boys in the living room and the cage in the living room if the snake was already in the apartment?

Got it, I think : |

So far though, I am still not understanding why no one heard when the ceiling gave way under a 100lb snake, or why the boys did not scream : /

Too many questions.

“why the boys did not scream”

Maybe they couldn’t, anymore.

Just read the New York Post’s version. Turns out the snake wasn’t being caged in the pet store - but in the apartment.
Even though this was a “sleepover” between friends, the owner’s son was sleeping in a separate bedroom.
The article says the boys spent the previous day playing with animals on a farm and may have smelled like yummy barn animals to a hungry snake.

“I’m always uncomfortable saying the government should make more laws against this that or the other.”

so you won’t object to our building a nuclear power plant next door to your house then, right?

YES, government should be limited, and very limited, but public safety and common sense about it is one of the limited government roles government should take, and no matter how you scratch it potentially dangerous animals DO pose a safety hazardous risk to residences of people when those residences are in the same building as where the potentially dangerous animals are housed - that is NOT “big, out of control government” its just common sense.
