TMZ broke the story (STILL PACKING HEAT) and now its been picked up by, among others, CBS, USA Today, Reuters, the Washington Times, and even Britains Daily Mail.
Why is this news?
Zimmerman told the officer that he had a weapon in his glove compartment and was going nowhere in particular, said Brian Brooks, city manager of Forney, Texas, about 25 miles southeast of Dallas, where Zimmerman was stopped.
The gun in the glove box is legal in Texas, and police routinely ask motorists if they have weapons in the car, Brooks said. He said the entire stop lasted less than five minutes.
It wasnt for super-excessive speeds, they just got him on regular speeding, Brooks said. Its a pretty routine stop except for the fact that it was George Zimmerman.
Zimmerman, 29, who is white and Hispanic, was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter on July 13 in Florida after a racially charged trial in the shooting of Martin in February 2012. Thousands of people demonstrated across the United States after the verdict.
Not even a story about a routine traffic stop, where he wasnt so much as ticketed, can be spared the eternal white Hispanic mention. The news here, I guess, is that Zimmermans got himself a new gun and is riding around with it. (TMZs lede: George Zimmerman is still armed and theoretically dangerous.) Why anyone would be surprised that a guy facing thousands of death threats is carrying is unclear. But I guess if, like Piers Morgan, youre intent on believing for your own political reasons that Zimmerman is a murderer despite what Florida cops, a Florida jury, and the vast bulk of the evidence say, then yeah, obviously youll be pretend-concerned to be reminded that hes out there, just waiting to trick an unsuspecting teen into bashing his head against the sidewalk as a pretext to shooting him. Or maybe Im giving them too much credit. Maybe this is just the media equivalent of a BOLO, to remind Zimmerman that no matter where he goes, his whereabouts will be publicized. If they cant get him on a murder charge, they can at least make sure he sleeps with one eye open. TMZ was even nice enough to post the dashboard-cam photo of Zimmermans truck and to note that he was traveling without a disguise. Better not turn the lights out tonight, murderer.
Heres the real news: Why is a guy whose life is in danger driving around by himself, without any attempt to conceal his identity, heading nowhere in particular? And why would he do something as stupid as speeding, knowing that even the most minor legal infraction might reveal his whereabouts? (I dont know why the cops in Texas decided to alert the media about a traffic stop that didnt result in even a fine, but you can guess the motives in leaking.) I can understand him not wanting to hole up round-the-clock in a safe house like a trapped rat, but thats mighty foolish given his notoriety. At least bring someone with you if youre going out.
In other Zimmerman news, the Smithsonian Institution is hoping to racialize this case, which even the Martin familys own lawyer said wasnt about race, for posterity. The Teachable Moment will be taught, whether the facts support it or not.
Zimmerman, 29, who is white and Hispanic
Why is this relevant?
Totally relevant: Barack Obama, “who is white and African”
Isn’t that how he’s referred?
If there is one state that Zimmerman is probably safest in, it is Texas.
trying to avoid giving any further information regarding where he is staying.
Legally of course, you don’t have to tell the cops “where you are going”.
Nowhere in particular, is probably the best answer GZ could have given, since if he made up a destination he could be charged with giving false information to a police officer.
Never had a cop ask me if I had a gun in the car. I’m bothered by that. I frequently travel with a concealed NON REGISTERED gun. Not their business unless they have probable cause to search my vehicle. They shouldn’t be allowed to ask without probable cause. Why would someone intending harm tell the truth?
Could be this PD just wanted to give Obama the finger.
I think it’s hilarious.
It’s not shocking that anyone in Texas would say “yea, he’s here and we welcome him WITH OPEN ARMS....oh and we only gave him a warning too, nanner nanner.”
I’d do it. Just to piss off Obama and the media pimps. Plus if he’s in east Texas, ain’t no outside Obama voters gonna come in to make trouble. Those folks don’t play that.
I LOVE that he’s in Texas.
Zimmerman was in one of the safest places he could be. I have family in and near Forney.....Zimmerman has a lot of support there. Folks in those parts have gun safes bigger than my residence
I remain unconvinced that this was THE George Zimmerman.
But at THE FORNEY-GATE?
His wife goes to trial for her perjury accusation in 3 weeks —
They just cannot leave George well enough alone. The cop handled the stop appropriately and was kind enough to give George a warning and told him to slow down.
Because he's a US citizen? Because this is his home?
Yes, and my bet is most of the state will be happy to help keep the crazies who want to harm him in check.
There are exceptions and places in TX where he should simply stay away. Suspect he understands that.
Hope he finds a nice job, quiet little town with good neighbors and lives out his life peacefully.
BUMP!
I know O-B has sold more guns in America.
One thing I would suggest to Zim: You should know better. Don’t draw attention to yourself. Don’t speed. Lay low. You don’t need to give them any help locating you.
That section of road has a slower speed limit than the surrounding highways, especially if you are approaching from the east.
Zimmerman wouldn't have gotten off with a warning unless he was just over the speed limit (i.e. driving 70 in a 60 mph zone). I suspect he wasn't watching carefully and didn't notice the limit had changed.
When is the media going to stop this nonsense?
5.56mm
Hell...that’s easy....police radio...all the guys at work had access...
I remember my boss....flaming mad...said he got stopped for going 40 in a 35 mile zone....And he got a ticket.
