War Hero Bud Day Dies at 88
Northwest Florida Daily News ^ | Sunday, July 28, 2013

Retired Air Force Colonel Bud Day, a celebrated war hero and veteran's activist, died Saturday. He was 88.

Day, a Medal of Honor recipient, was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for more than five years. He also received the Purple Heart.

William Everett, regional commander for the Military Order of the Purple Heart, said Day was very giving of his free time, attending military ceremonies until his health no longer allowed him to. One of his last appearances was at his own birthday celebration Feb. 24.

"Very, very sad," Everett said, of hearing about Day's death Saturday morning. "It's a very sad moment."

In an email Everett circulated to contacts and members of the MOPH, Everett said the funeral was expected to be Thursday with burial at Barancas National Memorial Cemetery in Pensacola. More details about arrangements were expected to be released Monday, Everett said.

A brief correction...Colonel Day was Vice Commander of the 33rd Tactical Fighter Wing at Eglin during his last active duty assignment, not the JAG. As you know, Bud Day never minced words and even during that era, he voiced concerns that the “new” generation of Air Force leaders were politicians, not warriors. That sort of straight talk was enough to keep him from reaching flag rank, and it’s a damn shame. Considering the scores of mediocrities that have populated the Air Force’s senior officer corps over the last 40 years, it’s criminal that Bud Day never got one star, let alone two or three.

As for his legal career, he earned a law degree from the University of South Dakota in the late 1940s, before joining the Air Force Reserve, and later, transitioning to active duty. After retiring from the USAF, he returned to private practice in Shalimar, Florida and was an active member of the bar until the final months of his life.

Truly a “Hero Among Heroes”

Col. Day flew the F100 in Nam as did my husband who flew the F100D Super Sabre.

My understanding is he was John McCain’s cellmate in Hanoi. He nursed John back to health, and John broke and reset his arm (after the NVA had broken his arm and set it crooked so that he would not fly again).

when Bud Day was examined after he was liberated, the doctor reported that his medical care was satisfactory as his arm was set correctly. He was asked who the doctor was. “Dr. John McCain” Day said, and explained how it got set correctly.

Day almost escaped, making it to the DMZ before being recaptured.

Godspeed.
