Why Have Gun Sales Dropped So Much?
The Atlantic Wire ^ | July 25, 2013 | Philip Bump

n June, the number of background checks conducted by the FBI — a strong indicator of new gun sales — hit its lowest level since September 2011. The figure was down 54 percent from December 2012, in which more background checks were performed than any previous month in history. But why?

There are probably four reasons : Obama, the seasons, gun control, and physics.

Using data from the FBI, we created a chart showing the number of background checks per month. This isn't tied directly to sales; Kentucky, for example, requires a new check at the renewal of a gun permit. But it's a good indicator.

You can only buy so many guns, and we kind of went all out back when Toomey and Manchin were having a love-in.

Its more simple than that. Everyone that wants to buy a gun has committed to buy one. Everyone else is planning on where to commit a crime where the people are’t armed.

I have more guns than I can feed. Theres no point in buying another gun i cant feed. I don’t need statistical data to know lots of folks are buying up the ammo I’m looking for.

Well, an indiction that they are slowing is that my last background check (state of colorado) took 5 minutes. 3 or 4 hours last year.

Perhaps it is because we are all well armed, been to the range and are locked and loaded to respond and protect ourselves from the attacks spurned on by the Obama/Holden inflamed race riots. Summer will be over soon, so they will have to put on a big press to incite their followers.

We’re not thinking about guns right now. We’re thinking about family time, camping, vacations, and back to school.

If there is another Sandy Hook type event, with more liberal spit flying, sales will go back up.

(I would like an automatic weapon for when law and order breaks down but cannot legally buy one.)

I wouldn't worry too much. When this day comes, they'll be laying all over the ground.

Well I know why I am not buying anymore, I do not need anymore.

I would like some more .22lr in the future though.

I hope this means the prices will come down. A lot of the volume of gun and ammo sales has been speculators. Hopefully, the speculators will now start dumping their hoards into the market, and I’ll be able to get lots of cheap stuff......

Please o please!

Gun sales are dropping because we are now storing up on ammo!

SSSSSHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Gander Mountain in Green Bay had a REAL GOOD SALE on .223 and 9mm today ....

Surprisingly, they also had AMMO to SELL!

The chart merely indicates a deceleration in sales volume following the record spike after Obama’s re-election. This article is irrelevant as they are looking at the data from the wrong point of view.

The smart money already armed up some months ago? ...

Firearms and ammo decades ago. Five years ago, bought a reloading press and stocked up on brass, primers, powder, and bullets to make my own cartridges.

Reason 5: Supply

Everything is on back order. Try to find a new Glock, Smith & Wesson or Springfield to buy . . . seriously, try to buy a gun and see what you find.

Sales are down because they’ve all been sold and the manufacturers haven’t caught up to demand.

The smart money would have anticipated this and bought a progressive reloading press and picked up a few thousand primers, brass, bullets and an eight pound jug of powder.

And some of us are either well stocked or out of discretionary funds. Or the latter because of the former.

How hard is it to go into an ammo biz?

Go to Midway USA and buy a press. Then find raw materials as they become available to roll your own ammo. People have been doing this for a decades.

Must be a few years back. Obama has decreased eligibility for food stamps (more people can get them now) and increased the monthly rate. They are even advertising in Mexico availability of food stamps in USA! Did you have 4 people in your household needing food stamps? Or may be you had high amount in unemployment checks.
