n June, the number of background checks conducted by the FBI a strong indicator of new gun sales hit its lowest level since September 2011. The figure was down 54 percent from December 2012, in which more background checks were performed than any previous month in history. But why?
There are probably four reasons : Obama, the seasons, gun control, and physics.
Using data from the FBI, we created a chart showing the number of background checks per month. This isn't tied directly to sales; Kentucky, for example, requires a new check at the renewal of a gun permit. But it's a good indicator.

To put that in perspective, two months of that "valley" and we'd have a shiny new gun for every member of the active duty Chinese Red Army. Add three months to that and we'd pick up their reservists and paramilitaries, too.
Which reminds me, I haven't bought a new gun in months...
Because Cracka’s only got two hands.
I’ve researched it.
It’ is about $5,000,000 in startup costs to start ONE LINE of ammo. That is just to produce the cartridges. You still have cost for raw materials (primers, powder, brass), labor costs as well as marketing/branding, shipping, licensing, lawyers, and most importantly Insurance costs.
This is assuming that you are going to produce in enough volume to compete at a national level.
I guess that would be a start-from-scratch. But for an existing ammo business to add factories that would be cheaper? And anyhow are there any patriotic $10,000,000’aires around who wouldn’t mind sinking half their fortunes?
If I had to guess, it would be that anyone who wants to own a gun legally already has one. The rest are being sold on the streets from the Fast and Furious cache and are illegal.
And who’d worry about competing if you could sell all you made locally at a decent price... hey, let the mail orders come in. Get your stuff quality vouched by recognized gun clubs and hey, now you got HiTechRedNeck rounds... well, if I had the $10 million I’d entertain the idea.
It appears the panic buying has finally stopped or at least slowed.
I have noticed that ARs are now available at several sources and at reasonable prices.
Ammo continues to be hard to find.
Have you heard of crowd sourcing? Lots of little guys pre-buying stuff so that the idea can get off the ground. I’ve seen cool concepts raise $500,000+ via crowd sourcing.
It might be an interesting idea to attempt to crowd source an ammo company. Do you think we could get enough people to pre-buy 5 bricks of .22 to raise 5 or 6 million? Maybe 9mm or .40
Very interesting concept. More work than I have the free time to pursue, but if I had enough dough to live on without the day job that could be tempting.
Obama finally has the Mexican druggies and Al Qaeda fully armed up.
I read some time ago that a government contracted ammo line was being replaced in MO. Wondered at the time if the old equipment could be purchased cheaply.
LOL..Because our wives an girlfriends are geting tired of looking at us in our closet safes surrounded by a 150 gun display and saying “Honey, I like shooting too and a few of those are mine, but, we each only have two hands....and rent/mortgage”.
To me the graph just shows the seasonality of firearms sales. Apparently fewer firearms are purchased in the summer, probably because people are busy with other pursuits, it isn’t hunting season yet, and Christmas shopping hasn’t started yet. And of course the rate of firearms purchases drops off some when the liberal Democrats aren’t as busy trying to subvert the Bill of Rights.
I’m in the same boat. I have a normal day job, two teens and one college kid at home. Starting up a magazine (bullets not print) business as well. I find myself shaking my own hand as I walk in/out my front door.
Hey, more (fire) power to you. I do not have much of a managerial bent and that’s what it takes in spades to get a business going that has some hope of not flopping.
I'm in that camp.
That was my first thought as well. AKA: Saturation.
I saw that. Strange.
That strategy might work better either importing ammunition or buying in bulk from a US vendor interested in a large order. Pooling resources to make a single volume purchase can open up new supply channels. No doubt their are ammunition factories outside of the USA that have not entered our market. There may be complex regulations involved in importing that make small volume sales unprofitable.
