Police in South Australia arrested a man who was found driving a car with no steering wheel and using a pair of vise grips to steer.

At about 8:25 a.m. Monday, police saw the driver of a white Holden sedan driving dangerously on two flat tires in the North Eastern suburbs, police say. When cops stopped the car, they found that no steering wheel was attached and the driver was using a pair of vise grips to guide and turn the car.

The car was unregistered and uninsured and was the subject of a defect notice not to be driven.

Further investigation revealed the car had been involved in a non-fatal hit and run minutes earlier.

The driver, 38, was found to be driving while disqualified and tested positive for methylamphetamine and cannabis, police said.

He was arrested and faces seven charges, including failing to stop at the scene of a crash and driving while disqualified.

There is all kinds of junk being driven down the road.

But then who needs laws regulating what can and how one drives on the highways. The cops are just revenue generators after all./S

I have and I used 2 pairs of vise grips. I also drove a pickup truck the shifted with 2 gears on the column and 2 + reverse on the floor. I drove a Ford Courier all summer without a starter.

It was funny until I saw this. The jerk should be incarcerated for a very long time.

Vise grips are one of those essential tools when you drive a beater. Having no steering wheel does have a positive side, if you hide the vise grips, how many kids are going to steal your car for a joy ride?

One of my secrets for driving in crime infested cities is to take a car that looks like its next trip is to the scrapyard. Keep plenty of trash on the passenger side and very few are going to give the car a second look.

The rustoleum accents over any rust adds to the effect. Don’t use a spray can though. Use a brush.

“Keep plenty of trash on the passenger side and very few are going to give the car a second look.”

You are describing my 1957 Bel Air, which is now a souped up sweet ride but has a trash interior. The car is worth money, but it is the only one in town so it sticks out like a sore thumb if someone stole it. It’s tricky to start, and the wiring would be a nightmare to hack, plus it is loud so I;d know if someone is trying to grab it.
Looks can be deceiving.

For this inventive Aussie the hit skip accident may be the bigger worry.

There are parts of Australia where men take special pride in making machines work without buying the parts "necessary", even if they're accessible and they can afford them. In New Zealand it's practically a national mantra called "Kiwi Ingenuity". Dare say it used to be common here too. And still is in places where the road winds and the Liberals never go.

Been there done that. Who needs a starter when you can find a hill?

Forgot to mention the other little problem of the Meth and Weed blood test results. Maybe this guy is more Cheech and Chong than Jedd Clampett.

Well, if you are going to get stopped for 1 thing, might as well go for broke. Flat tires, expired license and vise grip steering wheel. Cool.

Use a brush.

I watched a guy paint his car in the street in front of his house with a pea green flat latex paint years ago. The brush marks made it extra special. I didn't check to see if he had vise grips.

I have vise grips I bought about 55 years ago to work on my bicycle. Some of the chrome is worn off where is use it as a hammer but it's still working fine.
