The Justice Department said Sunday that it will review the George Zimmerman case for possible civil rights violations, after a jury acquitted the Florida neighborhood watch volunteer in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, while Zimmerman's attorney says his client's safety is at risk.

NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous started the drive by posting a petition Sunday morning on the website MoveOn.org that is addressed to Attorney General Eric Holder.

"The most fundamental of civil rights -- the right to life -- was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin," Jealous wrote in the petition.

The Justice Department has already been reviewing the handling of the criminal case in which Zimmerman, a Hispanic, fatally shot Martin, a black teen, in February 2012, raising concerns about such issues as racial profiling and equal justice....

Perhaps we should try Trayvon Martin for attempted murder. Who cares if he’s dead. He doesn’t have to take the stand.

I think Congress should ask Holder "Are you sure you want to do that after your agency's meddling in pretrial protests?"

Couple of thoughts:

obama and holder can sue for civil rights violation. And then the next president can just let it go away (like obama did with the black panther polling station lawsuit).

Zimmerman might get a civil lawsuit from the family of Trayvon Martin. Civil lawsuits are much different than criminal. It has a much lower threshold for guilt. Zimmerman will have to take the stand. HOWEVER, the thug life of TM will be dug and put on the stand. It will not be pretty and there is a good chance TM family does not want to go through that (as the DA in the criminal case made TM look like a 14 year angel just eating some skittles)

Zimmerman is going to sue quite a few news organizations for their blatant prevision of the news. They will settle rather than be dragged out into the sunshine to show bias and deceit. Zimmerman will be a rich man.

For Zimmerman to be charged by the feds for violating Trayvon Martin’s civil rights, wouldn’t he have had to be acting under color of authority? The police officers in the Rodney King federal charged were able to be charged with violating King’s right because they were acting under color of authority. There is nothing like that here.

"The most fundamental of civil rights -- the right to life -- was violated ..."

Tell that to the fifty-five million victims of Roe v. Wade.

I saw numerous news reports today that said Trayvon and his parents lived in Miami Gardens. They never question why he was in Sanford.

You're asking questions like this regime is actually following the law. That is bourgeois thinking comrade! Under Regime, person is guilty because there is a political need for person to be guilty.

His dad lived in Sanford, Mom in Miami. He was only in Sanford because Mom sent him to Sanford because he was suspended from school for weed.

According to FL law, he is immune from civil action because he was acquitted based on the shooting being justified in that it was in self-defense. The Martins were counting on big settlements ... not gonna get ‘em!

There is nothing like that here.

I would not be so sure. As a WHITE Hispanic he was actively working to keep blacks at the bottom of the economic ladder in Amerikkka, as all WHITES are. That WHITES are still the majority in Amerikkka show that they really represent the power of the state in Amerikkka. So they are really the state. Hence, GZ, acting as an agent of the state oppressed the little kid Trayvon. THERE is your civil rights connection!

(It is really fun to do this when you discard logic....)
