P.S. What’s the decision height at SFO and why didn’t the pilot initiate a missed approach?

An MSNBC reporter said that he flew the aircraft recently and an off-duty pilot said of the 777 “you almost have to crash this plane purposely in order for it to crash.”

I’ll be on the lookout, Sarah. Thanks.

Yes they attach a wooden oak block under the tail of the plane and force the plane on it's tail while testing the speeds the plane can safely take off.
The test pilots take the plane to the slowest max speeds that it can safely take off.
In normal operations these are called tail trikes and can cause really severe damage to the plane.
The really cool or rather hot test is when they take the plane to V1 and then put the brakes on without any other method of stopping the plane than the brakes, the brakes turn cherry hot and the pilots have to sit there for 5 mins before the firefighters can put the fire out on the wheels, tires and brakes.

Everybody hits the mic at exactly the same time. it takes about 12-14 seconds before anything can get through.

SFOs elevation is listed as 13 feet. It's a good thing, too.
Extreme high tides can be in the 8'-10' range. Must be exciting during high wind/waves conditions.

Israelis know what to look out for. If your a regular on the airline they will let you go by but if they have never seen you before they start asking questions, at random. Simple questions like “Why are you traveling to Israel?” and “Who will you be staying with?” Simple things like that. Once my sister went with her fiance at the time to Israel and boy did they grill her, she didnt understand why, never found out really but they let her board the plane. We all have Israeli passports as well as US passports now since they were required in order to fly overseas
I would bet there’s someone out there that was able to video this crash from their phone.

Hard to believe no one died here. If this is the case, these people are very lucky...
That and the cabin crew did a hell of a job.

That technology has nothing to do with landing, it is to avoid running into a granite overcast.

Language problem with foreign pilots. Also, a cultural difference in that some cultures have a hard time “losing face” and “going around” from an approach where the pilot is expecting to make a landing, might be considered losing face.
