Currently just Tweets and locals talking about this, nothing on news sites yet. Lots of stuff in the Twitter feed, including links to uploaded videos of the smoking mess.
Yes, it's only fighters and support aircraft landing on carriers which deliberately don't flare, right?
SFO has parallel runways, may have been cleared to land on the right runway, but tried to land on the left runway. Probably not using ILS, looks like VFR conditions.
True. . .true. . .
Well, I suppose it technically belongs to Asiana's insurance company. Although I don't think there's too much of value left. Maybe some cockpit avionics.
The engines are about $25M each.
I am sure this has been posted, tweets from a guy on the flight.

He not only landed short but he hit the rocks in the breakwater with his wheels. The approach for 280 is over water, there is a large section of rock rip-rap that protects the runway threshold from wave damage. The debris field starts right in that rock wall. Not only short but off center to the right of runway center. From what I can see of the lines in the dirt the pilot might not have gotten all his wheels on the asphalt.
That plane took a helluva beating and allowed people to walk away. I notice that the aft pressure bulkhead is intact but that everything is gone behind it. That’s a huge factor in the cabin holding together long enough for the folks to scramble. There’s a note from FAA saying that the pilot was asked to switch runways at a late point-—that might explain the poor runway alignment.
In any case when you see the whole debris field there won’t be much question about the basic circumstance.
Well, if you consider the bay and the dirt as 'wrong runway' I suppose you are right...however they WERE cleared 28L, and at least some pieces ended up there.
now confirmed:
It hit the berm at the runway end. That means they were around 1000 feet short on landing.
Again, did someone forget to reset the altimeter to San Fransisco conditions?
At that website, someone offers a prayer for the safety of the passengers and someone else replied thusly:

Are you kidding, Mary???? Geez.... Prey on another issue
I am astonished that some people must write things like that.
I don’t think anyone the least bit knowledgeable would question that. They’re quick, like FReepers.
It looks like at least one passenger managed to grab her carry on luggage.
“It didnt go very far after it hit so he says the guy probably didnt dial in his barometric pressure right so he landed way too soon. He was probably looking at the dials and not the ground.”
My uninformed conclusion as well, but better stated than I.
The 777 will land itself. Honestly it doesn’t need a pilot IMHO. Darn near idiot proof. Something mechanical happened if you ask me.
too low..too slow..I see the big rocks it drageed off the berm.
If the reports that all safely evacuated are true..It’s a miracle..
I just crash landed at SFO. Tail ripped off. Most everyone seems fine. I'm ok. Surreal... (at @flySFO) [pic] https://t.co/E6Ur1XEfa4

Fire and rescue people all over the place. They're evacuating the injured. Haven't felt this way since 9/11.

Quantas is good too..but my family when flying anywhere overseas only fly El Al..some people when traveling to Israel prefer taking multiple flights to get to Tel Aviv(Since taking multiple flights is cheaper) but my Mom likes going 1 way, only trusts El Al, knock on wood one of the best airlines out there..they profile EVERYONE, even if your Israeli they look at you and ask you why your traveling and who your staying with
It is hard to explain how both crew members can flub a landing so badly, whether VRF or IFR. But they evidently did.
SFO is more or less at sea level, isn't it?
Agreed. A few seagulls or pelicans flying 50 yards out from the coastline can change everything. I’m callin’ bird(s) strike causing loss of power then tail strike!
SFO’s elevation is listed as 13 feet.
