At times of peak demand for electricity, do you want your refrigerator to run at the discretion of the power company?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has revised its Energy Star energy-efficiency requirements for residential refrigerators, and it is encouraging the inclusion of connected features that respond to utility signals to curb their energy consumption.
The EPA announced the new requirements on June 27. Included is the optional smart-grid connection for customers to electronically connect their refrigerator or freezer with a utility provider.

yet china can use more and more coal.
and obama’s’giving 7billion of our dollars’for more coal plants in africa.
I’m glad I still have a Frigidare from 1938 that still works.
The article keeps disappearing as soon as I click on it which I’ve done many times, so could you please at least tell me if this applies to new purchase refrigerators or also to old ones?
And eventually a $10,000 fine and 1 year in jail (felony). Of course, federal government officials will be exempt.
sovereign immunmity. case denied.
We are moving pretty soon to our retreat. We are switching to propane gas stove, fridge and freezer. Electric company will not have to worry about it. Oh and solar system for everthing else.
Didn’t Honeywell announce a Utility Controlled thermostat for newly built homes? I bet the EPA is absolutely ecstatic!
hahahaha! That’s what I was just saying to my husband.
I have told him if our washer starts to go kapoot, we will pay whatever fortune for the parts to repair it.
I am NOT using those rotten new washers. My MIL had to get a new one and she says she now has to ‘play’ with her clothes.
Remember when “optional” meant something you wanted that didn’t come as standard equipment like an 8 track player in a 73 Gremlin?
This is just one of a long laundry list of liberals to meet our increased energy demand in the USA by using efficient means to reduce consumption. Another “idea” is to use your electric car to store power and allow the electric company to tap into it in peek times of demand. Go figure! If you want to know more cheek out National Council of State Legislators (NCSL).
These are the same Nazi bass turds who kept saying the Republicans want to take away their freedom and liberty and control their lives. It’s getting worse here than it was in the old Soviet Union and Third Reich. Total control liberals are in charge now.
we actually got a new washer and dryer this year. did research, found ones that washer is top loader w/stainless basket, but more efficient and quieter, without computer touch settings - these fail or break with power problems and dryer was basic dryer. too many problems with the front loaders so those never made the first cut.
Trial balloon. If Obama’s NAZIs get away with this your furnace and air conditioner are NEXT.
And yet the government wants the ability to mess with *my* standard size Kenmore fridge.
I’d like to hear Backwoodsengineer’s comments on this.
Consider this:
ADT is the largest provider of home security in the country. They and others are rapidly installing “pulse” and other “branded” home security systems that can also control virtually any home appliance from your smartphone, tablet or internet connection.
The software connects to the home via a wireless carrier such as AT&T etc...
All that would be required is either legislation or some EPA rule that would grant the gov’t or your power company access to your system during “emergencies” and they would have control of how much power you consume.
