In more than a dozen Connecticut towns, guns outnumber people and the number of legally registered guns is on the rise.
John Mullins is a gun owner and shot his first gun at 5 years old. He started with BB guns and owned a shotgun by age 14.
There are three people that live in Mullins' house, but there are also four guns.
"I'm looking to buy another one for the upcoming hunting season," Mullins said.
Residents like Mullins are contributing to the increase of legally registered guns. In 2011, the town population was 7,300 while the number of guns was more than 9,400.
First Selectwoman Joyce Okonuk has paid attention to the recent rise.
"It's a steady rise in the past two years," Okonuk said. "So it's gotten even more extreme at this point."
Okonuk said in recent months, especially after the Newtown shooting, she saw a dramatic increase in registration applications.
"It has probably tripled, many quadrupled since that time period," Okonuk said.
The towns with guns outnumbering residents also includes Chaplin, Colebrook, Eastford, Goshen, Hampton, Harwinton, Lyme, Norfolk, Roxbury, Salem, Union and Voluntown.
Okonuk said in a town like Lebanon, most people collect weapons and a lot of people are gun collectors.
Scott Lawlor from the Criminal Division of the State's Office of Policy and Management said he expects to see the numbers rise as more law abiding gun owners take measures to stay within the law, especially since the state's gun law passed.
"We're definitely going to see a lot more people who themselves get a license or credential," Lawlor said. "We'll see a lot more firearms enter our database.
Although the small town numbers are large, officials said it is not necessarily an indication of increased violence.

Is this just shoddy reporting or am I missing something?
Heck, that’s nothing to brag about. In my rural West Virginia town, I bet guns outnumber trees....
And in a lot of lakes, after the recent boating accidents, guns outnumber fish.
Every one of those towns has a very low crime rate (I lived in Hampton for a year). They are mostly rural, so a gun is used as a tool as well as self defense. You may as well ask if someone has a chain saw or socket set.
If I were a gun nut, I’d have enough to arm my subdivision
Only in “some” Connecticut towns? There really is a problem here.
Every household should have:
For every adult:
1 .45ACP combat pistol
1 .308 battle rifle
1 12ga shotgun
For every child over the age of ten:
1 .22LR rifle
1 .22LR pistol
1 .410 shotgun
Plus whatever hobby and collectible firearms they might find useful - hunting guns, target guns, etc.
There is no such thing as an Assault weapon.
How does one define it?
Cain Killed Abel with what? a rock or a stick?
Samson killed a thousand men with the with the jawbone of an ass.
Ban Asses!
If you ask me WHY DOES THE MEDIA KNOW THIS ??!!
The only guns that are currently required to be registered in CT are handguns. So HANDGUNS outnumber the population. If the govt only knew what the long gun count was to go along with that they'd pee themselves.

Y’all be good subjects and tell who’s got em.
Sounds like a place where I would love to live......if it wasn’t in CT.
LOL!
instead of the .410, I’d recommend a 20 gauge...
I’ve tried shooting clays with a .410, couldn’t hit a one (I was used to a 12 gauge).
The 20 doesn’t have that much more kick than the .410, and has more “intruder knockdown” capability, and can be used by the females in the family regardless of age (over 10, as you suggest).
Why,because its Channel 3
The same station that has the “On Your Side” spot.Where if you see something in your town you don’t like, legal or not, they will send their team of ass holes over to investigate. In other words come on your property stick a mic in your face and attempt to piss you off
It is a station imbeded with homosexuals and screaming liberals.
The only decent guy they ever had was Al Terzi and he bailed a while back.
In any gun owning household, the # of guns SHOULD outnumber the number of people.
Why do you have to be a nut? Also tell the Ct. goverment that all the none registered guns are legal too. They can pack sand.
Is this just shoddy reporting or am I missing something?
If the topic is firearms or the Second Amendment and the publication is a U.S. "news" paper or television station, the odds are extremely high the reporting isn't shoddy, but flagrantly biased.
Blind hatred never sees very far ahead.
Don’t forget those pesky unmarked mine shafts in the dessert! If I could only find it again I could maybe recover all my guns and ammo that fell in.
Long gunz vs. hand gunz.
I concur.
