The vast majority of Americans, 81%, say they are aware of the 2010 Affordable Care Act's (ACA's) requirement that most Americans must carry health insurance or pay a fine. Americans who are currently uninsured -- those most directly affected by this requirement -- are much less likely to be aware of the provision, with 56% saying they know about it and 43% saying they are unaware.
The results are based on a June 20-24 Gallup poll, which asked a series of questions on the ACA, the comprehensive healthcare reform bill signed into law by President Obama in 2010. Many of the law's key provisions will go into effect January 2014. Gallup previously reported that more Americans thought the law would make the healthcare situation worse than better for themselves and the nation.
The subgroups that are less likely to be aware of the health insurance requirement are also the subgroups that are least likely to be insured, including Hispanics, blacks, young adults, and those in lower-income households.
The federal government is ramping up its efforts to increase awareness among the uninsured to purchase health insurance. Those who lack insurance can find and purchase a plan for 2014 through a government website starting Oct. 1.
Three in Four Americans at Least Somewhat Familiar With the ACA
From a broader perspective, most Americans say they are at least somewhat familiar with the ACA as a whole -- with 16% saying they are very familiar with it and 59% saying they are somewhat familiar with it. Those who currently have insurance are more likely to say they are familiar with the law than those who are uninsured.

You go to fine them, theyll pull out a couple a raggedy singles from the pocket of their jeans.
Truer than you know, because I work in finance I usually end up helping family and friends do their taxes during tax season. A friend of mine asked if I would help his twenty-something daughter and son-in-law. When they came over, it was obvious that they were the low-information Obama voter type, who didn't care about anything to do with money or taxes except how big a refund they were getting. Well as it turns out, they made slightly too much and had nothing withheld so they ended up owing money. As soon as I told them, they got up and said "forget it then, just throw it away." When I patiently tried to explain that they law said they had to file, they looked at me like I was crazy and said "Why in the world would we file if it means we have to PAY money?!?"
Stories like this one crack me up. The moocher base of the Democrat party isn’t going to be “fined” OR “taxed” - - the whole idea behind Ubama’s communist health care plan was that their health care costs would be paid for by the people who get up and go to work every day. Friggin duh. What, like it’s going to be deducted from their EBT (welfare) debit cards and food stamps or something? lol
He's wrong. The IRS can do any damn thing it pleases, legal or not, and no one will do anything about it.
And, if anyone claims it doesn't have the legal authority, it will simply add a line to the regulations giving itself that authority. Does it all the time. Banana republic.
The left’s preferred groups will pay neither premiums nor fines, and will consume a disproportionate amount of the healthcare resources that they’re getting for free.
They'll just tell them a few more lies....problem solved, rat voters back in the fold.
AFAIK the IRS simply adds it to your tax bill and then if you don't pay it, exacts the same retribution as if you don't pay your taxes.
That's the whole point of using the IRS. It can destroy anyone's life on a whim. And it will. Bet on it. This is going to be intimidation of the first degree.
Does the IRS have enough manpower to go after tens of millions if they don’t pay this “tax” (note the quotes)?
Do we have enough jail cells to house them?
The IRS doesn’t usually bother with people like that until they start making real money.
Then they do an ex-post-facto ten-year extraction, with fines and penalties.
But as a tax guy, you probably know that.
Print the message on bags of Skittles to get the word out?
Most of them are below 150% of the poverty line, so they’ll just get free MediCal (or equivalent). They won’t have a payment.

How many are actually uninsured? I recall before the Obamacare was being negotiated there was only a very small number of uninsured. Medicaid took care of the poor and the rich uninsured preferred to pay cash (like Rush). The remaining were an insignificant number.
What are the actual numbers??
If someone pays a fine does the fine serve as a premium and he then has government coverage?
If someone without insurance goes to the emergency room does the hospital bill the government?
If someone without insurance goes to the doctor and offers to pay cash does the doctor turn in the patient for not filing on his insurance? Maybe it’s like car insurance. The patient has insurance but doesn’t want to file for fear that his premiums will go up.
So many questions. Not enough stupid politicians and their staffs to answer them.
Yes. My health premium doubled, and my payroll witholdings increased by 4.9% because of Obamacare. This is just a massive program for penalizing productive people and rewarding failure.
A lot of Americans will be surprised next year when they lose their employer’s health insurance and then find themselves uninsured because they cannot afford private insurance, make too much to qualify for Medicaid and the health care exchanges are not in operation. So through no fault of their own they are uninsured and then get fined by the IRS because of it. I think even the low information voter will understand they are getting screwed.
All part of the plan, make things so FUBAR that people will beg for a complete government takeover of healthcare.
Well, they are right!
Most of them will NOT have to pay for their health insurance. Most will go on the expanded Medicaid rolls (by design in Obamacare). The rest will be subsidized to a large degree.
More de facto reparations.
The ‘right’ people won’t be fined.
I don’t believe they are going to fine everyone who doesn’t get insurance ... only certain people will be fined.
The IRS has that list started.

If "free" medical care wasn't a right, most people wouldn't dare go without insurance even if they had to cut back on frills like smartphone, $200 sneakers, and bigscreens.
